Who is the gas level monitor the owner or driver??
We did a little running around today. I had my daughter drive my car when I dropped by to pick her up. We had two stops to make and then we were going to head over to see my mother at the nursing home. When I left for her house I had 1/4 tank. I thought to myself I needed to stop and get gas, but the prices are a bit better further toward town than out in the sticks where I live.
After driving 45 minutes.....while on the freeway I hear a loud BING and my daughter says "OH CRAP....GAS!" I jump over to look at the dash and sure enough.....it is flashing LOW LOW LOW across the screen. It doesn't have much at all in the tank and we are in bumper to bumper downtown construction traffic. I about went BONKERS on the poor girl.
I was not about to run out of gas on the freeway while it was a parking lot. I had her take the first exit we could and followed my GPS to the closest station.....which was the NASTIEST looking business I've been to in quite some time.
Coral got out and wouldn't drive any more. She pumped the gas and was ready to be a passenger again. I don't think this one is on me......the gauges are in front of the driver's face......so I think it was ALL HER!

your car , you knew it was low on gas , you shouldn't let it get that low if the first place . you should have seen to it that she got gas at the first decent station you came to , not worry about a penny or two in price at some station father down the road , 90% on you,, rest of her for not just getting it herself 0 -

Normally I would say the driver but since you have already admitted you knew it was low of gas when you left home,,you must have forgotten to get some after you picked your daughter up.. I am going to say in this case,,the car owner is at fault,,the driver would have assumed the owner already bought enough gas for the days venture.. 0 -
well at least you made it . shared fault if you knew and she could obvious see it
my wife is the queen of driving on almost empty tanks of gas
from first time I met her to 40 years later I can count on the gas gauge being at or less than a 1/4 ( and I am glad to see that much in it )
I lost track of the times I would have my fingers crossed I could make it to work or into town for gas
I have been with her and say look there is 49 gas stations ( OK even a couple ) were almost out pull in .. ..I do not want to mess with it right now ( [V][V][V][:(!][:(!][:(!] )
she has gotten a bit better but normally if I am riding along and I have to get out and put the gas in

well my rule has always been when the tank is at 1/4 or below the driver fills it asap and since you knew it was then you needed to fill it when you were driving and did not just as when you let her drive and she failed to fill the tank. both failed but first driver failed first. 0 -
The minute I get around that baby my brain is all about him.....plus, you cannot see anything about the dash from the passenger side. I think the person driving should at least say "it says we have less than 1/8th of a tank" if the gauge in front of your face shows its that low.
I knew at 1/4th tank we were low and had every intention of getting gas.....but the minute I wasn't driving (and the grandbaby was there) I wasn't the one with the gauge right in front of my face.
I will take "SOME" of the blame.....but I think if you are driving you are in charge of EVERYTHING about the car.0 -

I've always told my wife that it is just as easy to keep the top half of the tank full as it is the bottom half. Still, when I get in her car, it is usually sitting at 1/4 or less. After 48 years I should be used to it. 0 -
EVERYONE is wrong! It is the car's fault for not 'dinging' earlier and repeatedly until it was refilled.
Plus, I would like to see cars with a reserve tank like my motorcycle had almost 50 years ago! Run out of gas, flip a switch and you had gas enough for 25 miles of driving to find a station.
Sounds foolproof, right? WRONG! One time I ran out of gas, went to flip the switch and discovered that it was already flipped. So I got to do the 'Walk Of Shame' looking for gas.0 -
Running out of gas on a backed up freeway would be an adventure! Years from now you could tell your grandchildren the story, if you survived the adventure![:o)]
There are several great excuses (reasons) for letting your gas tank run low.
1) You don't want old gas mixed with new.
2) Need the tank empty for maintenance.
3) The wide price fluctuations in gas prices these days can mean several dollars saved if you play the game "Buy Low, Drive Far" [:0]
4) Everyone should know just how far your vehicle will travel after the low level light comes on. I recommend this test be done with a full 5 gallon gas can in the trunk![:)]0 -
It amazes me how folks take the gas gauge reading as gospel. I get 19 MPG mixed city and highway and the "math" adds up to 437 miles. I start looking for gas stations when the "gauge" reads 1/2 (it's actually closer to 1/4 tank) or 300 miles.
Also even though the tank holds 23 gallons I don't want the crap that might be in the tank going through the system. I did have a new fuel pump installed not too long ago I doubt they cleaned the tank before the re-install.

Personally I find you both at fault. But more her than you. You knew it was getting low, and you didn't let her know too find a gas station? You should have let her know
She drove for 45 minutes and didn't look at the gauges.. not once?? Personally l'd never let her drive any of my vehicles, the gauges are there so that you don't fry an engine or run out of gas, if you're not looking at the gauges how are you going to know if your engine is getting hot.
So because you didn't let her know you're almost out of fuel, that part was your fault, and her not looking at the gauges was her fault. You both need to take responsibility. But I find her mostly at fault because you should never drive a vehicle without watching the gauges,and you could have forgot to tell her that you are almost out of gas, things can slip a person's mind.0 -

Did you tell her it was low? I expect that when a person has me drive their car, it's not going to need gas, and if it does that they will at least inform me so that I can be reimbursed if I fill it. 0 -
