when will I ever learn...

I haven't locked the keys in my car for years and years, yet I locked it in there yesterday and again today. Yesterday I was about 20 miles away from home, but I do have roadside assistance through my insurance so it didn't cost me anything to have it unlocked...I just had to wait a half hour for them to get there

Today when I lock my keys in my car, I was only about 5 blocks away from my house. So I just hoofed it home. But I wasn't wearing a coat because I locked it into the car also, so I froze my butt off getting to my house. Now I got to walk back to my car with my spare keys. At least I'll have a jacket on for my hike back...

The sad thing is, that I usually carry an extra key on my person. But I lost that one Friday, I guess that's why I've been locking my keys in my car. Because I don't have a spare on my person. Once I get back to my car I'm going to head straight down and get a new key made...

    if the wife and I go ( or my sons ) any distance, I make sure we both have a set of keys just in case , but it also helps when shopping . I can go back to the car / truck any time and so can they .

    I had a couple of the hide a key magnet holders many years back . may not be a bad idea to buy some for the vehicles I have now [:I]

    I have started something in about the last month. I will put my keys in a Different pocket. Like in my jacket pocket. That can get dangerous. Lucky for me I have to have my keys to lock the door.

    I keep the spare key hidden on both of my cars with the magnetic key holder.

    A story that I hate to admit...Was in an old country store one time when I was low on beer. Went in and bought a 6 pack to get me the rest of the way home. Got the beer and went out to my truck to find out that I locked my self out of the truck. Luckily there was a pay phone outside of the store so I could call my bride to bring me a set of keys to open my truck. After calling her, and hanging up the phone, I realized that some F'n SOB had smeared ketchup on the earpiece of the phone... I was so mad that I jerked the receiver out of the pay phone. I went back into the store to see if they had some napkins to wipe the side of my head off...and the store owner asked the keys on the counter were mine.. Yea, uh huh...[B)]

    Nope. Just go on Amazon and get one there for $50. They even send you instructions on how to mate it to your car. Worked like a charm on our 2 Toyotas.

    Thank you thank you thank you. I never thought to check on Amazon. We got a Toyota with only 1 remote key and a Buick that both fobs are iffy on whether they work or not. I got 2 Toyota keys and 1 for the Buck for less than $40. Unfortunately my year Toyota has to be programmed by a pro, but I'm sure it will still be cheaper than buying from the dealer.

    Our newer vehicles have a "chipped" key- but I keep a regular flat metal key in my wallet. Won't start the jeep- but it will unlock the door.

    We installed push button locks on all the house doors. We live pretty far out and park in the garage. We now, out of (bad) habit just drop the keys on the console whenever we park at home. The only key on the chain is the car key.

    I geocache, which involves lots of stops and in n out of the car.

    I've gotten in the habit of ensuring that the driver window is down sufficiently to get my hand in whenever I leave the car with the keys still inside.

    Whenever I get out at a store or restaurant, I physically hold my keys up and look at them. With this habit, I have never locked myself out. Watch, I'll probably lock myself out this week after that last statement...

    We were in the RV and I lost the keys to the car wife had a set but she was gone at the time. New fob from Amazon was $30 it could only be set by Ford $60 bucks, it has a key in it but that's another $30 bucks to have it cut. I realized after that your SOL without the fob even if you can get in there's no way to start the car according to Ford.

    I don't trust those magnetic boxes; one pothole and they're gone. I use a stainless steel badge clip. The kind that goes on a neck lanyard. Wire the key to the clip, wrap the key in duct tape to keep it clean, and then fasten the clip onto a brake wire, turn signal wire, etc under a fender. Never comes off, never rusts.

    That works with a key or a chipped key, but you have to think up a way to hide a fob on your own. So far, I don't drive a fob car but my wife's Lexus won't let you lock the doors if the fob is inside.

    yes ^^^^^^^^^^ great piece of mind for a couple of dollars.

    PS: Don't put it in the trunk or under the hood or were it might fall off.[:D]
