Lawmakers Propose Social Media Hate Speech Checks Before Gun Purchases

awmakers in New York have begun drafting legislation that would require potential gun owners to have the past three years of their social media reviewed before they were granted permission to own a firearm.

Eric Adams, the president of Brooklyn Borough, and state Senator Kevin Palmer are currently writing the proposed legislation, which would give law enforcement authorities the power to check up to three years of an individual?s social media accounts and internet search history before they are allowed to buy a gun, WCBS Newsradio 880 reported. One of the main aims is to identify any hate speech shared by the users, as the politicians noted that such offensive comments are generally only discovered after mass shootings occur.

    Define "Hate Speech".

    I guarantee you one thing - It won't be the 'content' of the speech that will get a denial. It will be the personal bias of the Speech Reviewer.

    THIS is the exact government oppression Orwell warned us about.

    This is the EXACT reason the 2nd Amendment was included in the US Constitution.

    Every legislator who votes to pass this will be in Direct Violation of their Oath of Office, and needs to be removed, forcibly if required.

    I think this would lose on appeal to the SCOTUS. Clearly infringement of rights (both 1st and 2nd). Also can claim that the state is doing precognition policing by claiming you will be a threat because you used one the untold number of "key words" they will use.

    As Tech stated, there is no definition of what they will consider "hate speech" and it will be entirely up to the person doing the review.

    Also, how long will they have to complete these reviews? Younger people post upwards of 100 times a day (100x365x3 = 109,500 posts to look through)...yeah that will only take a few minutes.

    Then you need to see what others have posted on their social media and if that is considered "hate speech" and you did not remove it or report them then you will most likely be denied as well.

    I can see them going after key words such as:
    Terrorism
    Terrorist
    Constitution
    We The People
    The tree of liberty
    Give me liberty or give me death
    Molon Labe
    etc
    etc
    etc

    It is easy enough to maintain a alternate profile with a email not associated with your ISP God forbid your work might decide anyone who frequents a gun page might not be a quality employee.

    All I ever hear is people hating on NY. It would be a great place to live if we got rid of NYC.

    While I would not doubt that the NY Assembly could pass such a law, and that Cuomo would sign it in a heart beat, I don't think this will go anywhere. Of course, that's what I said about the SAFE Act, too. [:(!]
