is there any difference between a Regular Cop, and a Sherrifs deputy?
In delaware we had the Middletown PD, but here in Pinellas County, we have a the PCSO, pinellas county sheriffs office.

I have been retired for about 20 years, but back in my day the members of swat had regular jobs in patrol and detective.
I was on the dive team, until swat took it over, and had a regular job in patrol.0 -

That is what I figured. I cannot think a Dept could afford to have a SWAT team jocked up and standing by 24/7.0 -

Without knowing the answer I'd have thought their 'gear' was in the Swat Mobile and they suited up on the way to the scene?

Major size PD's have a full time 24/7
ready to go swat teams.
Just kinda like the firemen at a fire
station....call comes in they suit up and roll.
In my time, now near 20 years ago we would use 3-4
swat members if we ran a warrant on a known
violent BG...
Likewise, in most major cities the SWAT members have

On a different subject: I have had serious doubts from the git go that the guy liked Trump at all. He did not hatch and carry out his fake bomb plan overnight IMO, and to my knowledge his earliest date of alledgedly being a Trump supporter is 2016. He still looks like a patsy to me, and since we generally never hear about any deatails contrary to the initial findings, I doubt we'll ever know for certain.0 -
I saw a lot of video with patrol officers. Also saw the swat guys. The big cities have full time swat teams. All they do is train, workout, and respond to incidents or serve high risk warrants. 0 -

The others are all jocked up and kitted out like that is their regular dress/uniform.

Sam, we had/have two SWAT platoons, one generally working a day shift depending on deployment needs and one 1900-0300. The daytime team was/is ?on call? from 0300 or so overnight. Workouts/runs every day. We came in an hour early, on our time, and the department gave us an additional half hour to hook up with that. Back in the day we were in regular duty uniforms, had to come in off the street, change, etc, draw our gear then roll on a call up, and we had plenty. Finally we convinced command that time was wasted and potentially lives as well with this ridiculousness. Today, modified uniforms are worn, each team member keeps their gear with them. Changing out takes only a minute or so. This way, as very often happens, several team guys may be close when a situation develops enabling them to get onscene, make initial assessments and, in an active shooter situation, get to work while the others are on the way, forming up, etc . When not training, detailed to special events or on a call up they work patrolling highcrime/target areas. I don?t know any agency with full time teams that sit around ?getting ready to get ready? or ?standing by-in full gear-to stand by?. Maybe on TV but not in the real world. (For the record, we were, both platoons combined, between barricades, high risk raids, etc, and mutual aid to other agencies, called out around 200x a year. Not exactly standing by to stand by. I seriously doubt that tempo has slowed any .) 0 -

Major metro areas have have full time SWAT teams...LAPD, NYPD Emergency Service, Dallas, Boston...I am assuming that Pittsburg does as well. Other than some conspiracy it would be the only explanation for why the were able to respond in such a time frame.0 -

You're right...in no way should the Police be prepared to deal with gunman armed with high power rifles that shoot seven officers in a suburban neighborhood, or running around downtown Dallas killing five officers, or walking into a Synagogue with a rifle and killing eleven people and wounding four heavily armed officers. Yep it makes no sense for the Police to have the necessary equipment to mitigate these type threats. After all a patrol officer with his pistol, soft body armor has all the tools he needs to meet that threat. [;)]0 -

Thanks for the info guys.
I was looking at guys who were half kitted up and that is what I figured:
They get the call, drive to the scene, open the trunk and put on their junk, Grab the AR and some mags and move out............Where the second wave would be more prepared and be fully kitted out.
Also I have come to the conclusion that the photographers think the full on swat guys are "More Cool" looking so they get more press.0 -
Maybe the press thinks so Sam. My suggestion? Let them hump all that damn gear for a day or two when it's about 100* outside, then make an entry under fire, spend hours dealing with the shooter and doing what ya can for the wounded and see how "cool" it is. I suppose it makes for a good video lead on the evening news. In reality, not so much. You've been there. 0 -

If it makes you feel better, DOD now requires that if they give you an MRAP or any other vehicle that you have to paint it a civilian color with in three months of receipt. So after spending another $5000-7500 in tax payer money on a paint job it won't be militarized anymore! [;)]0 -
County sheriff Dept swat team and dive team carry their gear well most of it in the patrol cars When needed and called out someone is designated to bring the swat mobile and boats etc to the scene 0
