My Favorite Hunting

Is Dove hunting. I have not dove hunted since 1983. Around here their is no good places left.[:(]

Deer hunting is to cold. It hurts to bad to sit still in the stand.[:(]

    I agree I love Bird hunting and Quail was my favorite. Pheasant and Chucker are fun and if I need a good walk Grouse is awesome but hunting behind a good Quail Dog and seeing a covey flush is about as good as it gets...............

    I have not been in 15 years and I have not seen a Quail in 15. Fire ants, coon and foxes have about wiped them out.[:(]

    I have fine memories of being afield - amongst alfalfa in rows...

    Beater in front of me - good dogs pointing and flushing at my side...

    A 28 gauge over and under of great marque in my hands - high brass birdshot at my fingers...

    The rush - the flush - a flash of color and moment in line with the rib mounted beads of brass - the perfect quick arc of the muzzle as it sweeps and tracks

    Ptarmigan was the days trophy - we thanked nature for her bounty - we honored the bird

    The sound of shot falling on leaves - lead rain rustling

    Smoking wads in my path - shells ejected and caught mid air

    The scent of cordite and burning paper

    Leather and metal and sweat

    Used to hunt dove down near Peoria, Il. for years. (with a dog) One of the guy's mother was Cagin. We breasted them out on a Sat evening and the next day she prepared a Sunday dinner which was always outstanding. Different gravies and always a rice dish. Great eating[:p]

    bow hunting... after a while and a few kills i began to be selective. i would spot a buck i would decide to take or disregard all others. it was not about the meat or the antlers. it was about the chase. my skills versus his...one season i had over 70 deer in bow shootable range and never pulled back once. yet the cat and mouse game of figuring out his next move went on. he lived another season, only to die in a road accident. it was the best season of hunting i ever had.

    My Dad was a big Quail hunter so grew up hunting quail.. As I got older I started deer hunting.. This is the first year in 10 years I even bought a hunting license. I decided I wanted some deer meat .. I sat in a stand yesterday and today,,I saw 6 yesterday and 9 today and still have not shot a deer with anything but my cell phone camera..I was texting the pictures to my Wife while she was making fun of me for not shooting

    I'm more of a bird/deer/duck hunter, but I love chasing bunnies. Jumped two swampers up today while deer hunting.

    some where a few years ago i gave it up ..did not see any need to kill some animal just because i could....exception is armadillos around the farmstead..well have had several nights of big digs by the large shop building so i set out a live trap designed by a retired game warden friend...did not have a dead mouse or such for bait so i just set it by one of the holes and 2nd night caught a big young badger...guess he just got curious....anyway when i picked it up and set it in the pickup and he was really pizzed..took em about a mile away to a shelterbelt, laid the tailgate down and opened the end of the trap ...he bailed out like a paratrooper out of the drop ramp of a plane then stopped and looked at me for a minute and took off....we both were happy...adios

    I have not hunted in over a decade - last time was pheasant and ptarmigan in the Dominican Republic on a business trip

    Before that it was a javalina in Texas with a uberti baby rolling block

    Ducks and snow goose and pheasant and rabbit and ptarmigan growing up

    One deer many moons ago

    Not an avid hunter but it was part of growing up

    There is still some Dove hunting around these parts, and ducks in a few places. But Quail dried up years ago, except for the very few large farms that mostly don't allow non family to hunt. Too many jackass immigrants that think they can go where they want and shoot at shadows, livestock and dogs.

    Dad was a sharecropper. Our food came from the garden or from hunting and fishing. Ate a lot of squirrel but preferred just about anything else.

    Rabbit was my favorite ,Pheasant was fine, ducks OK , fresh cool water bullheads were also OK. Old hens made into soup when they stopped laying got canned and made good soup.


    I haven't been able to hunt for a number of years now - I miss it a lot. Last Saturday I got read of all the rest of my hunting guns. I kept my carry gun and one Old Army #2 S&W with Japanese markings along with a handful of early S&W revolvers I am putting back into working condition. Holding on to some of the good memories.

    I was raised in a hunting family. We lived close to my Grandparents and Aunt and Uncle.
    My Grandfather lived for Duck hunting. Dove hunting was a tune up for duck hunting. Pheasant hunting was something to do after a morning duck hunt!
    We didn't really start serious deer hunting around here until the late 70's, prior to that My Dad, Uncle, and Grandpa used to go to Joe Davies County in NW Illinois for deer every year.
    My Dad and Uncle went to Ontario Moose hunting every year in the late 50's and through the 60's. Needless to say, we ate good!! My Mother is an excellent cook, and not afraid to try cooking anything!
    Big Game hunting is probably my favorite today. Although watching a good dog work a Pheasant field with Browning Superposed 28 gauge on my shoulder or a cold day with hot coffee in a duck blind is an awful good way to spend some time. Not to mention a hot afternoon next to a Sunflower field shooting "AT" Doves is a great and humbling way to get ready for some cold beer!
    I'll hunt Sat-Tuesday this week in SW Wisconsin for Deer. I have no room for trophies, and my freezers are loaded with Deer and Elk from Montana, but I still love the hunt!
    The preparation, packing, and spending quality time with friends and family is my favorite part of hunting these days......

    Mike, Do you mean Partridge or Grouse instead of Ptarmigan?
    Ptarmigan is an Arctic/Sub Arctic bird, isn't it?
