When I Went Through Basic

I did not think about Thanksgiving and Christmas. That was the time i went through basic.

We had 1 person jump to his death off of the second story landing. He landed on his head.

We had 1 person fall out for revalie in the mourning and he kept running. We never heard what happened to him.

I remember it being so cold that when we did the obstacle course the water hazzards were froze solid and you could see where some people before you fell in.

The obstacle course was easy i could not make my bed worth a crap.[:(]

    I ended up making the bed every morning for a fellow recruit to keep him from catching heck.

    He became my squad leader!!! [:0]

    Yea me and a friend swapped mourning chores. If not i would still be in basic trying to get my corners right.[:)]

    I was at Ft Benning June, July and Aug. Then went through Airborne School in Sep-Oct

    It was nice and warm[;)]

    Christmas and Thanksgiving I was at my unit and we were on RRF so I ate in the chow hall.

    I was at Harmony Church for both Basic and AIT, one thing I do remember was I had signed up for an Airborne Ranger Contract and was to be assigned to 2/75. At Harmony Church I got to see what the Benning phase of Ranger School was all about[:0]

    I must say I was not looking forward to it.

    But after 18 months at 2/75 being hazed, rode hard and put away wet, then going to Pre-Ranger, Ranger School while hard Physically and mentally was not all that bad.

    AIT Training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. Every morning the sergeant would pinch out legs to insure we had our long johns on. A good time.

    Fort Ord March 1968. We were shooting our M-14's at the beach rifle ranges when someone's dog got into the target area. He didn't last long.

    I went to basic at Ft.Wood,shortly after MP Johnny Lee Thorton murdered 3 local kids. I served as an MP at Ft. Wood for 2 yrs. We weren't liked.

    Both of my brothers went to Ft. Leonard Wood for basic in the summer of 1970.

    I was at Ft Leonard Wood Oct-Mar. Had a guy in our Co. from Hawaii. He was miserable, never seen snow before.

    We had 2 AKNG guys who were eskimos. They about died in July-Aug at Ft Benning.

    Amarillo AFB , July 1968....it was so flat that if you went over the hill...they'd watch you run for a week, and then come and get ya...[:)]

    I went to the resort training location of Great Lakes Illinois :)

    We had a wonderful steam sauna in the streets so that when you were marching to breakfast in sub zero weather you could stop the troop over it and warm them up!

    Also some ladies frequented the local bars I asked one if I could buy her a drink and she said she was a working lady I reminded her that I too had a job :) later I learned exactly what that meant! [:0]

    Another plush benefit when I continued my visit to the area for A school we had a snow drift up the side of the barracks that made a great place to store bottles of liquor.

    Funny thing about that place is I couldn't get to the bar without my Pea Coat and almost every other belonging wrapped around me but leaving the bar to go back to base I often forgot my coat :)

    Grew up near there. Yep, flat enough stormy weather can't sneak up on you[:D]
