Both My Dogs
Both of my dogs are pulling/licking their hair. Bear my 100 pound mastiff/shepherd dog has 3 nickel size places where he has licked off of him.
My lab/pit mix pulled a lot of hair out around her butt and on her tail.
The vet could not find any reason for the dogs to be doing it. No fleas, ticks, nothing. We did not change food or anything but something happened. If it keeps on it will get expensive.
I was giving the dogs benahdryl and the vet gave them prednisone and she said i could keep on giving benahdrl if i wanted to.
The prednisone is working and both dogs are getting better.
My mastiff/shepherd thinks he is part cat. He licks himself everyday like a cat. He also loves getting brushed. You can brush him for 30 minuets and he will just sit there and let you.

I was thinking hot spots on Bear but the lab mix pulls her hair out. The vet said it was allergys. 0 -
Hope you figure it out and it gets better Dave. I know mine is like my baby. Hate it for them when they are having issues. Good luck.

Yea they are my kids. LOL
I just dont understand how both could be allergy related but prednisone is fixing it.0 -
My Golden Retriever has a small rash like place on his side. He keeps biting at it. I may have to take him to the vet. He?ll probably have to wear the ?cone of shame?. 0 -
Thats what my dogs have and they do not have to wear a cone. She just gave them prednisone.
I give them benahdryl on my own and the vet said it was ok.
My big dog Bear will not wear a cone. He just sat there for 30 minuets when i had him fixed so i just took it off of him. I just got him from the pound back then and we were still building trust. That was almost 3 years ago.0 -

Could be food.
My Golden's were really shedding this winter so I switched their food to American Journey with fewer ingredients.
They stopped shedding so much. They like the the Duck and Sweet Potato food. Check out Chewy.com, the Salmon and sweet potato is another good chow for them and they like it. Its kind of spendy but they don't need as much of it so its kind of a wash.
Another thing I do is bath them more in the summer. I wet them down every day and have a baby pool they can lay in when I am outside. I give them a bath every week with Burts Bees shampoo which I get on Chewy also.
Long haired dogs really suffer in the hot months. I take mine to the lake every week before bath time and let them swim for a few hrs. It seems to work.0 -
The best thing for allergies from pollen is to eat local raw honey. It's got to be local honey containing the pollen that is local to your area. And it's better if it is raw. But I would check with your vet to make sure honey is not bad for your dog, it just may help... But then again I'm not a vet, so. But it does work wonders on humans that have pollen allergies
I just looked it up on the internet and this is what it says... Hope this helps your loved ones...
ogs really enjoy the taste of raw honey. A taste of honey as an occasional treat is fine. According to vetinfo.com, local honey can be used to help treat allergies triggered by pollen. A small amount given each day. The honey has to be from local hives so that it contains small amounts of the local pollen that are causing your pet??s allergies. The honey will help relieve some of your pet??s allergies. So, yes, it is fine to set aside some honey for dogs. That said, feeding your pet more than one teaspoon of honey each day can impact their health negatively. This is because dogs and cats are carnivores and have teeth and a digestive system evolved for eating meat, not sweets. Too much honey can also result in tooth decay and in extra calories that lead to obesity.
I got it from this website

My little dog was chewing on himself all the time, and scratching his belly. We figured out that he was having an allergy to commercial dogfood.
So we started making his dog food. Two pounds of brown rice, boiled along with a pound of lentils, add ten pounds chicken drum sticks and thighs. The doggie loved it! And the scratching and itching stopped.
Our vet wanted to give the dog some prescription and yes, he said to give one Benadryl a day. One a day for the rest of his life? No, thanks.
That is a powerful drug, tell you what, you try taking a 25 mg Benadryl every day just for the next week and see how you feel. That is typical for a doc, to treat the problem, rather than to find the cause of the problem and treat that.0 -
Right on there Mr. Griggs. VERY prevalent in todays world of Doctors. Next . . . 0 -
Thank you, asop.
I had researched it a little and then went to the vet. I told him I thought it was food allergies.
Now this is a good vet and I like him, but still, he is a doc.
And he asked if the doggie was also chewing on his feet, his ankles.
And I said he was.
So doc said, no way it was a food allergy.
So he wanted to give me a scrip and the dog was to take one pill a day for the rest of his life. And I asked about Benadryl and doc said that would be fine, one 25 mg Benadryl for the rest of his life.
Like I said try that stuff for a week and see how you feel.
I ignored the vet and went with my original instinct, and Thank God I did. The home made dog food fixed the little dog right up.
It takes some time, you make a 18 pound batch and freeze most of it in Tupperware.
Sometimes I put in a pound of liver.
The dogs love this home made food, it is cheap and obviously, there is some nasty crap in commercial dog food, or else, it wouldn't have made my little doggie so sick.0 -
I'd guess hot spot and food allergy. Wheat is my first guess. 0 -
My rott-n-lab had problems with chewing on his back side for a long time. He has a low thyroid issue and his hair is growing back now he's being treated for that. However, we also switched him from wheat and beef food to lamb & rice, so not sure if one or both of the changes were helpful. 0
