Here's why I never would be a police officer!
What do you do with mentality ill naked suspect/patients spitting and biting people ! I guess they need to handcuff all suspects regardless of their color or mental condition.

I was a paramedic for many years and I was involved in situations like this, more than once. Sometimes also involved police.
And, sometimes people who spit in the face of cops or medics live to regret it.0 -

Why would I want more hassle or sorrow than needed?
The pornography of murder and wreck scenes? If you think porn is naked women getting laid, something is wrong with you. Beautiful intact human bodies doing what is normal verses bloody mangled dead bodies who died in terror. Which is normal to you?

Letting scum live when they murdered grandma for her Social Security.
Dealing with miscreants 24/7 is not my idea of an enjoyable and productive life. If hassle comes my way in the course of living I'll deal with it. I won't go looking for it.

Me and my partner chased a 200 lbs naked lady down the side of an interstate....after she broke into her ex husbands home and threw all the living room furniture into the in ground pool...
It must have taken her several hours...heavy 1970 over stuffed Mediterranean style.....the furniture was so waterlogged, we had to use a tow truck that was normally used to tow tractor trailers to haul it all out of the pool.
When they were finished the pool was down a couple of feet...like giant tampons [:p][:p][:p]
Its very difficult to garb a big naked lady and put handcuffs on her.0 -
Spent several years running the PD for a very active hospital. On more than one occasion we have taken a pair of 2" thick gurney pads, and made a sandwich of a combative patient.
We were not there to punish them, but to establish physical control over a person that was out of control for whatever reason. Could be mental, bad drug reaction, DTs, physical trauma- but we WERE going to win the fight. Sometimes it WAS peeling naked patient off the light fixture. Rarely was it necessary to leave marks on the patient- but we WERE going to win.
Today's legal climate- would not TOUCH that job.0 -

Ever since our entire country did away with "State Hospitals" for mentally ill people, these situations come up every day all over the place.
All of the folks that should be living in institutions are now out on the streets or to be more accurate, are in prisons.
I have to admit that anyone who makes a career out of police work has to be a special kind of person.0 -

Our Gov tried to close the state mental health hospital. Its a brand new facility less than 3 years old. It cost $130 million to build.
Lucky its still open. You have seen all the nut cases I've shown in Lane County Mug shots. Just think how bad it would be if they closed that place.0 -
I am surprised to hear that there is still a state run mental hospital in existence today!
For the most part all of our nations mentally ill people have to go through our police trained, instead of our medical trained personnel in this sad day and age!

Unfortunately there are many who don?t belong in jails nor are they able to function in society, we need to have places for these folks. Shutting down state hospitals has done much more harm than good. The systems needed reforming, not elimination . 0 -

Being in the hospital with the mentally ill and retarded patients is a nightmare none should witness or experience

Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefit payments would stop, as would student loan payments, tax refunds, and payments to keep government facilities open. Started my LE career as a Hospital Police Officer....I was in more physical fights there in a year then I have been in 22 years of municipal LE. Hospitals are a central hub for everything that is going side ways. 0 -

There are so many people that ask for and deserve a pistol whipping.

We have several state hospitals in Virginia, but they are packed with little vacancies. Most short term acute commitments go to private facilities, they are full then the state has to take them. But we get stuck sitting on them for entirely too long while they make up their minds.0 -
I will tell y'all about one case I was involved in.
I think the statute of limitations has passed.
This was back in the eighties in a small town in central Georgia.
I got hired on as a paramedic at the small country EMS there.
Back then, the only state mental institution was in our town. It had 17,000 patients.
So, we had our small town regular hospital, with beds for 110 patients, where our EMS was, and then, down on the south side of town, was the huge Central State Hospital.
Back then there was a black guy who was a frequent caller to 911, his name was Madison H. This guy had seizure disorder and he had seizures on occasion. We transported this guy frequently.
But, Madison had a sport, where he would get neighbors to call 911 when he wasn't having a seizure. And he would get transported to our little hospital, and would just hang around the ER for 3 or 4 hours, when in fact there was no medical problem.
Hard to imagine that someone would voluntarily spend the evening in the ER but we had over a dozen "patients" like this. Hard for y'all civilians to imagine a person so screwed up that they would tie up EMS and hospital personnel for 4 hours, for nothing, but this is the kind of fruitcake you occasionally run in to in this line of work.
But Madison had another sport, and that was beating up emergency responders. Madison was 5-11 and 205, he was 32 years old, built like a bowling ball. Never had worked out with weights but he was solid muscle.
On two occasions, while having a "seizure" he had jacked the jaws of paramedics. The EMTs were scared of Madison. So EMS had a policy that whenever it was a call for Madison, PD would also be called.
One time, two medics and a cop were standing there watching Madison having a "seizure," they knew it was fake, and Madison sprung up and charged the cop, hit him in the knee like a tackle in a football game. The next day the officer was in the hospital for surgery, torn ligaments in the knee.
And so, you say, and I said, "Why doesn't the DA prosecute this jerk?" Well, Madison had carved out a little niche for himself, he really did have seizure disorder. If the DA had pressed charges Madison would have gotten an ACLU attorney and gotten the case dismissed.
So I got hired on and I soon learned the story of Madison. Well, I was not scared of Madison, I was a little bigger than Madison and I figured I could handle him in a fight. I decided I would straighten him out. I bided my time.
Then my new partner got hired. Steve was only about 185 and 5-10 but he was a weight lifter and Steve was a bad ass, I would not have wanted to fight him. Steve and I decided we were going to give Madison an attitude adjustment if we ever got the chance.
So, one night we were called to the ER, had to take a patient out to Central State. This was a typical call, about once a day a drunk, or a psycho, or whatever was brought into our little ER and we had to transport them to Central State. The paperwork was green colored and we called it a "green sheet" case, the guy would be taken out to the mental institute for 72 hours of observation.
So Steve and I went over to the ER, and the patient was Madison!
He was having a fake seizure as usual, and had taken a swing at an ER nurse so the nurses and hospital security, which was off duty cops, had Madison all bound up, hand and foot, with leather restraints.
We loaded Madison up onto our stretcher. It was Steve's turn to attend. I said "Steve why don't you drive I would like to attend."
Steve said "No way. Take the 'long trip' to Central State."
So I did, took a little detour there at midnight and stopped way out in the country on a dark back road.
I was looking through the little window, I saw Steve remove all the restraints. And Steve said, "Listen, you a**hole, you swung on a little ER nurse. You want to fight, fight me right here and right now! You are not tied down!"
Of course, Steve knew that if he got into trouble, I would be back there in an instant to help him out. But, I figured Steve could handle himself he was a real bad ass.
Madison just lay there on the stretcher.
And Steve said "Listen to me you a**hole! You are done with punching nurses! You are done with running in to cops! You are done with beating up Paramedics! You will start behaving yourself, or else, my partner and I are going to kick your ass!! What you are getting tonight is just a warm up to what you will get, if you keep attacking emergency personnel!"
I watched through the little window, Madison just lay there. Didn't say a word. I could tell he was scared.
Well, we took Madison out to Central State and he was admitted for 72 hours observation.
And that was the end of the problems with Madison H. His seizure disorder was evidently cured because he never called 911 again.0
