Brian Wolfer of the state wildlife department said if a cougar is tracked down, wildlife officials will kill it and then check for a DNA match with DNA left on hiker Diana Bober, 55, whose body was found Monday almost two weeks after she was last heard from.

Wolfer acknowledged that other cougars might be killed, but said killing and testing is the only option and that capturing a mountain lion in the steep terrain isn't an option.

Bober's death marked the first fatal attack by a wild cougar in Oregon and the second in the Pacific Northwest this year.

    Joy Heather Phillips I don?t think the woman should have been hiking alone for one. So I?m not sure how I feel about murdering the cat. I think they have a purpose here, and man takes their food..so we need to learn to co-exist. People never think about that do they..their main prey is deer and elk and guess who hunt the forests and takes their food?

    Its their stupid hunting laws that are making it way to hard to hunt them. The population has really grown to the point they are now seeing these cat in the city.

    Agreed. If she?d had a friend with her, maybe the lion would have eaten the friend first and left her alone.

    Hunting the cat now,,little late. If that hiker in a bear/ cougar area wasn't packing heat then she was just as stupid as can be. You NEVER go anywhere in the wilderness without something. At least I don't, and never will. Granted it's probably safer than playing with nitro, but now she is a stat in the books.

    Good question.


    I kind of feel the same as some of those commenters, leave it alone the heard needs some thinning.

    But on the other hand what would those commenters say if someone shot a Cat in self defense?


    I say leave it alone, carry a gun or bear spray when hiking or be prepared to be Cat food.

    So what caliber handgun is enough for a mt lion? 9mm, 40,10mm,45, 357....?

    I've never seen a live mt lion so honest question?

    A big one will be roughly man sized. I always pack a .40 but wouldn't feel under gunned with a 9.

    They are not built that tough but they are animal. I would think a well placed 9mm would be ok.

    I have only seen one killed and it was in a tree and the guy used a 357mag with 6" barrel. It was DRT.

    I have also seen guys hunt Leopards and the Guides Minimum was a 338 mag and he preferred a 375 mag. A Cougar can get as big as a Leopard easy.

    Again its an animal a dangerous one too. I have seen a bunch of bears killed over bait and some die easy and others don't. I think a animal is in a different state of mind when its hunting you, whether its a Bear or Cat.

    I think I would be OK with a 44 Mag or a 10mm with good bullets.

    Not having encountered one, just my 2 cents, anything above a 9 would be something I could control in a fast paced encounter.
    Hell even if she had a small 22 auto,and AWARE of her surroundings, would have been something.

    It's not so much as the cat having a taste for humans as it is it has learned people are easy prey.

    A bit more input for Josh...
    I've heard it said that the best caliber to ward off attack by a large predator is a .22 short. All you need to do is shoot your hikin' partner in the knee and then ease on outta there...[;)]

    Didn't C.J. (Buffalo) Jones have a habit of ropeing those cats, then dragging them down into a pack of hounds?

    These responses sound like they come for "pet parents" who consider animals "equal" to humans. Fact is the suspect animal may not be far from where the attack occurred and might me easily identified by being crippled, starving, or otherwise abnormal in appearance.
