Nearly lost another dog....Itty Bitty's emergency
Our Bulldog has allergies that are a HUGE pain to deal with. So, when she started wheezing three days ago I figured it was some kind of grass or tree giving her fits. I gave her a Benedryl and just hoped whatever it was would run it's course.
Last night she started to struggle to breathe pretty hard and it didn't let up. I thought I'd take her to the vet asap in the morning.
Around 4am I heard her jump out of a recliner onto the hardwood floor. It woke me up, but I laid there thinking she would settle back down and I'd hear her start to snore again soon.
I listened and listened for her to fall asleep and start her jackhammer, floor rattling, snore that she does. It never happened.
I got up and she was sitting by the back door waiting like she needed to go out. I let her out, but noticed she had spit up a foamy saliva in several places. It was 4am and I was freaking out.
Bitty wasn't breathing well at all.....she was having to put everything she had into getting each breath. I got Larry up and we talked about what to do. The Vet I wanted to try opened at 8am. I was still MAD about how my regular Vet handled my Golden Retriever this past year and I wasn't going to go back.
We got her loaded up....the vent blowing on her face in the car seemed to help. FINALLY....they opened and took our info. The Vet checked her out and said she had a tumor on the back of her throat and it wasn't anything she could deal with......we needed to go to the emergency vet in another town. She said it was going to be a Tracheotomy with extensive surgery to remove the tumor.
We pulled out of the parking lot without a real plan. I told Larry I didn't think Bitty would survive what she was describing. We decided we just wanted to stop the suffering and we would drive over to our regular Vet (that I was still MAD as heck at) and have Bitty put down.
We got there and Larry stayed in the car with Bitty.....I walked in and couldn't even speak like a normal human when I told them what I was there for. I sounded like a 7 year old that just got their but whooped because I was a snotty mess and crying my eyes out.
They tell me they will come outside in a minute and I go to the car. The Vet comes out and checks her.....her gums and tongue are blue....she quits breathing altogether when he tries to open her mouth to see the tumor.....she passed out and he said "I think I can get it, do you want me to try?"
I am up for anything at this point.....so we let him take her inside and head for the waiting room. After a short period of time they come out and tell me they have removed the problem, it was most of her soft pallet and they removed parts so she will not bark ever again....but they think she will be ok.
We just have to get her through the swelling after surgery and all will be fine! So, I've been up all night.....love the Vet I once hated and think a whole new Vet is a moron. Bitty will come home tomorrow (maybe.)

Prayers and best wishes,, 0 -
Kasey,
Glad to hear things are working out.
Vets are like shoes, one size doesn't fit all.
But if you can find the ones that suite your particular animals, hang with him until he retires.

Prayers for Bitty and her family.
You're a great doggy mom, Kasey.0 -
You guys are sweet. I just got the call from the Vet....she is awake and has pulled the tube out of her throat. He had hoped it would stay in a bit longer to help with the swelling. He thinks she is doing great....and looks like she will recover without any worry. I may get her home tomorrow. 0 -

Same here. Sorry you had to go through that Kasey. My dog (Buddy) is my best friend, and the best dog I have ever had. I'd be devastated.

How about an update on bitty? 0 -
I had a neighbor who was on full disability - lost 90% of his vision on the job as a police officer in a line of duty shooting incident
His seeing eye dog was having some issues and they went to see the vet
His golden has advanced macular degeneration and is going blind

She is doing very well......I've never had to go to the pharmacy to get meds for my dog, but we did this time. She is on Tramadol along with her antibiotics. She isn't acting stoned or loopy. She has been sleeping a lot, but when she is awake she seems like her normal self......ready to boss everyone around.0 -

We had a blind cocker spaniel.....she had her sight until she was older, but you wouldn't know she was blind with how she got around. I'm sure a service dog would be a whole different story, but blind dogs are pretty resilient from what I've seen.0 -

Great news.
I had to go to a CVS one time to get meds for my dog. I had to get some severe pain killer that was like a class 3 drug or something. My Dog had bone cancer and I was kind of upset at the time. I go in and hand them the prescription and they start looking all weird at me and want to see my ID. Well the Vet made it out to my Dog and we don't have the same name[;)]
They thought I was a druggie playing a scam.
I frinkin went off, called my vet had him tell them it was legit.
I was hotter than a 2 dollar pistol by the time I got out of there. That was the only time I ever went off in public on someone, I mean full metal jacket crazy Ranger NCO PTSD crazy. I am surprised they didn't call the law on me, but Like I said I was really upset about my buddy and really didn't need the hassle.
Now when I go in there they watch me like I am a mad man and its been 7 years since that happened. They probably have a poster on me in back........This guy is loony tunes watch him[;)]0 -
