most of the dept of AG has little to do with farmers..mostly welfare, school lunches, and social programs, helping guarrantee cheaper food at the counter than most countys etc, etc, i dealt in and out with farm agencies for many years but never really got any windfall money over the years...many times you see some people whip out the little plastic govt card at the checkout the taxpayer is helping them NOT the farmer....many people would scream their heads off when some watchdog group (like AWG) would scream about how much a farmer was getting >>>> NOT knowing the figures were a multi year total...NOT annual...and the infinite rules and controls placed on individual farmers to participate is mostly unknown to the general public....one needs to be critical of all the money thrown at foreign govts and counties being totally wasted for political baloney that are far far larger numbers ..

Shame is our entire crop production in the US doesn't exceed 897 billion!

From what I have read the harm to farmers from lost soy bean sales could not exceed 27B

867 BILLION. I'd never ever have guessed that amount of money for "anything". 20% of the total U.S. budget.

Thought it was 867 Million or 8.67 Billion or possibly 86.7 Billion.

    867 BILLION !!!

    surprised.gif

Shutdown the government for literally NOTHING in comparison.
    ONE TRILLION is 1000 Billion

Well, I'm happy; at least we were able to lend $4.9 billion to Elon Musk, so that the rich folks will be able to get a $10,000 tax credit on their Teslas.

Is this a great country, or what?

    Feeling slightly better:
The new bill is estimated to spend $428.3 billion over its 5-year lifespan, and $867.2 billion over the 10-year time frame by which all bills are measured per congressional budget rules.

Still a big chunk of change and fight for 5 Billion to keep us safer.

Now that's interesting, 867billion dollars to keep Farmers from growing crops, but not building a wall to keep out illegal immigrant Farm workers.... Who is going to support the illegal immigrant Farm workers because farmers are not growing crops so they can get that free money???

I think the cost of the farmer subsidy is substantially more than 867 billion dollars if you take in consideration the added welfare it causes.

And that's not considering the fact that we import Mexican produce that is tainted with e-coli

Having farmed for many years rest assured that farming is not the gravy train folks think it is. Every thing we buy we buy at retail and sell our products at wholesale prices . Somewhere in there we try to make a profit. Are some of the farm programs abused , sure they are but it pales in comparison to the welfare and Medicaid fraud going on in this country.

"We can pass a 867 Billion dollar farm bill to pay farmers in a country supposedly capitalist to not grow stuff"

The pie chart reveals that you (and everyone who follows your logic) are full of what comes out of the back end of male bovines.
Very few farmers "get paid to NOT grow stuff" but many get cost share to help preserve the environment, reduce erosion, control run-off, and maintain a sustainable level of production.

So you're saying the farmers have to be paid to do the right thing...[xx(][xx(]

    Whatever happened to integrity...[V][V]

if you got paid in the same percentage of your production as an ordinary farmer does to hopefully offset the political debacles laid upon his marketing you still could not afford to be a mason and 2 bit gigolo

"So you're saying the farmers have to be paid to do the right thing."

You're antagonistic but I'll offer this: How many businesses are willing to spend money on projects that do very little for their bottom line?
Big businesses have to be forced (be regulation or by public opinion)to do this sort of thing. Why do you discount the fact that farmers participate in these projects voluntarily while contributing their own funding.
Just for grins, here's how my latest cost share erosion control structure/livestock water impoundment played out: I waited 3 years before being selected for the project. I paid 100% of the initial clearing and site preparation. After completion of the project, I paid ALL costs up front, did ALL the finish work, and presented my PAID RECEIPTS for approval ($17,000 +/-)--then I waited. Forty five to 60 days later approximately $8000 of cost share reimbursement (less than 50% of the total cost)was deposited in my bank account. In the grand scheme of things, it will take 20 years to break even on the investment.
Now, I didn't HAVE to participate in that program and I didn't HAVE to build that water impoundment but I did because I knew it was beneficial to my land and a worthwhile expense.

Even the farm Senators tried to prevent the payments to Nephews and Nieces who are not even farmers as much as 125K each!

Obviously not all farmers are arseholes but clearly some are :)

    What Mobuck said.

You can be sure that for every dollar a farmer gets he earns it in paperwork, etc.

And if you want to choose to not participate they can make life very difficult.

When my dad was farming he rented land from several landowners. One time there was a program that was a really bad idea for a piece of land he owned, but if he didn't follow their rules they would take him off all their programs and any land owned by any of the land owners whose land he rented.

Yeah, just like the bad old days when the bad guys would go after entire families when one person messed up.

We made a reasonable living (after nearly getting wiped out in the 50's by wheat aphids until they got a good bug spray and planes to spray it) but we also worked 90-100 hour weeks, unlike the bureaucrats who thought they knew more about farming than the farmers.[:(!][:(!]
