how far will it shoot.........

just read a response in the warbirds pistol for deer thread, it pretty much sums up all shooting, pistol and rifle. Rcrosby basically said to not only know the limits of your gun, but yourself. This is the rule for all guns, pistol or rifle. Yes that 300 magnum may reach out and kill a deer at 500 yards, but can you hold it steady enough to hit the kill area at 500 yards. I would say your average whitetail has a instant kill area about the size of a softball. I haven't hunted elk, moose, ect so I don't know the I'll call it the quick kill shot,or drop in tracks shot. I would guess most are softball size targets.

now at 10 yards I could hit that with my 357, now the same shot at 75 yards would kill the deer, but with my eyes and shaky hands I couldn't hit that same softball consistantly enough to try a humane shot. same with a rifle that shoots 500 yards, yes the gun could kill at that range, but I know I just can't hold it steady enough to take a humane shot, I could shoot by why take a chance of wounding it and it running off to die a slow death.

I think it is more know YOUR limits your weapon barring a misfire should allways perform the same, can YOU???????

    That is the best thing anyone has said here in a long time.

    I do not hunt anymore but i have been with people if they could make out a deer at 1000 yards they would try the shot.

    I have stopped hunting with a lot of people because they did stupid stuff like that.

    I do not hunt now because if i killed one i would not feel like cleaning him much less dragging it out of the woods.

    I believe that the kill zone on a white tail deer is closer to a soccer ball than a softball. Just my 2 cents....

    You know those little 5 inch paper plates? Think they call them desert plates. My rule of thumb- the greatest range that I can hold ALL my shots on one of those- USING THE POSITION I WOULD USE WHILE HUNTING- is my max range.

    Yes, I have a few half minute rifles. What I DON'T have is a benchrest with bags or a Lead Sled in the woods. If I am in waist high broomstraw, I am NOT going to be prone, or even sitting.

    If it's available I always take a rest. The rest is a large factor in what distance I will shoot. Gun, sighting system, cartridge, bullet, wind are some of the things that determine distance.

    Let me prerequisite that most hunting shots are not taken in ideal conditions/circumstances.

    With a good rest and good conditions I would take a 400 yard shot with my 300 wsm. Off hand I may take a 100 yard shot with the same rifle I also may not. Sitting and using a bipod it's got range. Throw it over a tree limb and it had less effective range. The rest matters

    I killed a buck with my 454 free handed, weaver stance, at 80 yards using open sights. Last day of season with the last ounce of light, new handgun my wife had given me and I wanted a deer with it. It was by no means a snap shot, I took my time and squeezed the trigger very slowly.

    My encore hand gun in .270 win, 14" barrel with scope is capable to 300 yards. It would take a very good set up to get the 300 yards out of it. I killed a buck free hand with it at 60 yards. With a make do rest I may take a shot with it to 150 yards, but it would take a real good set up for me to shoot at a deer beyond that.

    Fire arm, sighting system, the shooter, the wind, available rest, so many variables.

    anyone remember the detective show Frank Cannon ?? the bad guy would shoot a scoped rifle from up on the ridge down at Frank and miss while Frank would knock him off with his 2" detective special ???? OH YEAH !!!....just gotta have the elevation and windage

    I have taken 2 deer, one @ 630 yds and the other @785 yds with a 30-06 Remington 760 using Remington 180 grn. core lokt ammo.
    conditions: open field, daylight, no wind with rest on a large hay bale.
    I wouldn't be afraid to try farther if I had the chance, but that is no option as of now due to building
    you have to know your weapon

    Would like to take to a witness to these shots. Do a ballistics on 30-06 and tell us the "hold over" on that 785 yards shot?

    Tell us how many deer you have killed with a .17 cal.

    Shooting sticks!

    They help stabilize handguns just as well as a long gun, but you still need to know your guns limitations.

    I have gotten around to carrying them everytime I go into the woods deer or varmint hunting.

    As per Barnes the 30-06 will drop 79 in at 600 yards with a 200 yard zero. A 785 shot would fall over 7 and a half feet.

    Always wondered about the gamemaster was accurate enough. JER shot MLK with one.
