Another Paycheck To Paycheck Post
Both my wife and i are on our second spouse. Both of our spouses were divorced because of drugs.
We have been together since 1999 or 2000. I think we got married in 2002. Both of us had our own savings, checking and 401Ks and other retirement accounts.
At 45 when i got cancer i had around 160,000 dollars. My wife applied for my disability and was approved over the internet. Stage 4 head and neck cancer automatically approves you for disability.
I was making about 50 to 80 thousand a year for the last 5 years i worked. I was maxing out my 401K and my IRA. With what was left i invested some with Edward Jones and bought my share of guns.
I never bought a new car or anything. The car i drove was about 10 years old.
When i got cancer i had to go 1 year without any income before i could start getting any disability. Meanwhile i still had to live for 1 year before i could get a dime.
Between bills, doctors and medicine i had to live off of my retirement. Every time i got some money out i had to pay huge penalties. If i knew i was going to get cancer i would have changed from 401K to a mutual fund.[:(]
Now i am broke not because of not trying but a little bit of bad luck and some bad investing strategy.
I am still paying back taxes from 2012.[V]
Not everyone living paycheck to paycheck are not bad planers but sometimes unseeable things pop up and causes things to go bad fast.
From 2010 to 2012 i had 6 surgeries along with chemo/radiation.
When the doctor tells you that you really need these 12 pills and they are 6000 dollars a piece and insurance will not cover them and you have to have them for a chance to live money goes fast.
My wifes money and mine are in seperate accounts but we both have axcess to the others money. We split the household bills and we each have our own credit cards and car payments.
Life sometimes causes problems and its not from anything a person did or did not do.
Things can go from great to bad fast and it does not matter how much you saved or how much you planned.
At 45 with over 160,000 invested i thought things would be great now but life or fate proved me wrong.
Its hard not to judge but you never know what happened. I was making great money when i got sick and i drove an old car with over 200,000 miles on it. To save money.
I could have just bought a vette like i wanted but i was saving for the future.
However i did splurge on vacations. Every year we would go somewhere nice.

years ago a big car company moved into the area(s) paid well above any other companys in the area like poor winning the lottery getting a job there
my wife worked at a furniture store for several years . the ones tuned down by the banks for a loan majority worked for the company I posted about they had bought new houses , cars , boats , 4 wheeler s to the point they were so far in over there heads they could not buy any more
I knew people working there told ( I worked there also but knew better ) if they missed one day it would kill them on there monthly payments ,and fall behind also a lot of OT was worked endless for the most part for years and years, then they cut it all out to save money when the economy went to hell
had a long line going to the office and HR crying and mad as hell OT was cut out they had based there payments and all the purchase ( house car and so on ) on the OT and were loosing cars trucks boats bikes and so on
company had to remind every one never count OT as a sure thing and never buy based on what you might get
white boards and local adds full of " toys" for sale
some do it to them self
as a young kid I grew up just about every one knew lived week to week
or check to check and some struggled even doing that I member neighbors 'borrowing a cup of sugar or coffee butter ,lard , to make dinner that night .
my MIL and FIL ( RIP ) lived in a company owned coal camp early on in there life they told me many times people would go to the company store the store the store keeper would call the mine ask if XXX was working and how many hours he had in for the day to make sure they had pay for what the wife needed that day
got sick or hurt after a short time no work they would kick them out of the company houses ( shacks )
some have to do what ever to just survive0 -
Thing is when they have no savings then one paycheck is going to be a big problem paying the house, car, motorcycle, boat payments. Etc.The poor government employee that didn't get paid on Friday is in trouble. You think I got a Cush guberment job, I. Secure. Then no check, no savings. There will be car repositions, forclosures, and real bad problems. But I guess the gov't will be paying them soon enough, with welfare, etc
What a mess, and every one of those employees is not sleeping well tonite.
I hope the wall gets funded this week, and all go back to work0 -
Its one thing to get in a bind due to Medical emergencies/necessities Dave.
It is a whole different thing to over buy and live beyond your means, in order to have an extravagant lifestyle.
With Medical issues, you do what you have to do Brother.
Wishing you the best Dave.

When I was diagnose with stage IV cancer I thought I was doing well
Had just bought 2 new to me but used cars - mint low mileage vehicles but 14 and 18 years old
Rented a modest very small house - had a fantastic job
I had started to pay things back and pay things forward - helping out my parents and nephews and other family - several charitable organizations
Nothing extravagant or something extraordinary but I was comfortable and happy
Cancer took it all away from me.
I may not be capable of working ever again - I am not permitted to work or drive (doctors orders)
