We know that Pietta quality has fluctuated over the years but this gun is built right! If you don't have one you should buy and buy now.

I've been reading most everything posted here for approx. 12-15 years.
Finally got an E-mail address so I could join the fray, (A Luddite.) A couple years ago. You are/were one of the good ones drobs.

I got one of those Sheriff's myself.
I put a $15 Wolff 32280 reduced power mainspring in it and my full length Pietta 1858, completely changes the handling of the gun. Makes the hammer easier to cock + smooths up the action.

Just saw one chambered in the newish 5.7mm bottle necked FN cartridge set up to use FN pistol mags...
And just saw one chambered in the .357 sig bottle necked pistol cartridge set up for glock magazines...
A friend is working on manufacturing one chambered in .41 action express set up for IMI mags...
And I hear rumors of a .460 S&W variant with a bbl that has progressive gain twist rifling ...
My curiosity is piqued.

I was going to order the 32280 mainspring. The second Sheriff's model I bought you need to be King Kong to cock it. It is heavier than the first one I bought just 2 months earlier.
As we know, Pietta quality fluctuates, although, other wise both guns are great, lock up tight and well finished.
So the 32280 is for the Colt but it says it will fit most other guns.
Will it fit the Pietta Sheriff's Remington?0 -

That's correct. The Colt mainspring works in both the Sheriff and Full Size 1858 Pietta. I believe it works in Uberti 1858's too.
Don't buy a Wolff sear bolt spring, though. The combination of the 2 Wolff springs in a Pietta Remington 1858 = failure to fire caps.

Personally I think I could duplicate that tool with a short piece of copper pipe and a hacksaw / Dremmel.
In the meantime, I load the Sheriff cylinder on my full length 1858 frame. Capping the cylinder when it's back on the Sheriff frame.
Lastly there's been a huge improvement to capping for Remington 1858's and Colts for that matter.
Fella out of Poland makes a Polish Capper that holds a full tin+ of caps and was originally designed for the 1858 nipples and now has modified it a bit to fit both Colt's and Remingtons.
