UPDATE: Good news from the Hyundai dealer...

On our trip back home from Seattle this past Friday our 2013 Hyundai Sonata with 89,400 miles on it started making some pretty bad engine noise when we got to Chattanooga which is about 130 miles from our home. The engine was knocking pretty bad so I drove the rest of the way taking it easy on the engine and we made it on home ok.

I took it to the Hyundai dealer on Monday morning and I just got a call from them this morning and the service guy said they ordered a new engine for the car. It appears it's a recall item on this year model and they're replacing the engine. The factory failed to remove metal shaving from the engine block that has caused a lot of engine failures.

That's some pretty good news for a change plus they're giving me a loaner car to drive until our car is fixed. Good to see they at least stand behind their cars. They could have just said tough luck, it blew it up and it'll cost you $5,000 to fix it.

We never had any problems with our Mitsubishi's. My son's wife is still driving the 2008 Galant we gave to her 4 years ago and it's got over 200,000 miles on it now. Only problem it's ever had is with the A/C at 175,000 miles and a flat tire sensor in the wheel and of course brakes and batteries.

The 2003 Mitsubishi we owned had over 300,000 miles on it when we sold it and I can't think of anything that ever went wrong with the car other than an oxygen sensor and batteries and brakes.

    had a similar problem with an 03 nissan. seems they had a bad design flaw in their 4cyl engines for about three years before they admitted it. they issued a recall but would only repair the ones still in warranty, mine wasn't. i will never buy another nissan and they really dont care, just for my personal satisfaction.

    We bought our Hyundai Sonata used so the warranty ran out on it sometime ago but they're still replacing the engine and supplying a loaner car which is pretty impressive to me.

    A lot of cabs in South American are Hyundai and Kia. They must hold up pretty well. City streets are about 80% smooth 20% potholes.

    I believe it's more like 80% potholes and 20% smooth with an additional 10% of potholes in the smooth sections. [:D]

    That is some VERY good news Smitty! Just think, you'll have a 2013 model just starting over again with that brand new engine!

    I have been driving my 2008 KIA V-6 Sportage 4x4 for the last 7 years and have no complaints! Just about to turn over to the 100,000 mile mark and uses no oil, good on gas, and drives thu Michigan winter like a steam roller![:)]

    They have an Subaru brat meets el Camino sport utility light duty truck in the works - saw it in several car mags - don't know if they made a car show example yet...

    UPDATE:

    Well I got nothing but good things to say about South Towne Hyundai in Riverdale, GA. Took the car in on Monday and they put a new motor in it and I picked it up on Thursday afternoon. So far it's running as smooth as can be.

    I thought to myself when I went to pick up the car that they probably didn't put a new motor in it but when I opened the hood and checked it out it's got a shiny new block and head sitting under there. I took the oil fill cap off of the valve cover and looked in it and it's clean as a whistle in there too. The paper work shows a new motor so I'm impressed with the way they handled everything and the speed in which they did it.

    I guess they've had plenty of practice at it since this recall involved a lot of Hyundai cars with metal shavings left in the block from the machine work during the manufacture of the motors.

    If Hyundai would get moving and sell the new Santa Cruz sport utility lifestyle light duty pick up truck in north America I would seriously consider buying one especially considering their current warranty policies...

    If Hyundai was still making the pony light pick up - or if used low mile examples were not as rare as hens teeth in the US I would absolutely buy one as a back up vehicle

    The classic 1970's variant it retro cool and the late production models had nice light car interiors and manual transmissions as well as a small Diesel engine...

    Nobody makes these types of vehicles any more.
