I once read they used glass balls and shot loads in the guns. and it was not uncommon for the audience to be hit with glass and lead shot ,, but at that time just part of being up close and going to such a sporting event
unlike today can you imagine if the crowd was dusted with pieces of glass and lead shot [:0][:0][:0] the law suits that would pile on

I have a dozen of the glass ball targets around here somewhere
Most akin to carnival glass or depression glass - sometimes called ad glass for the advertisement branding designs on them
Do not have a launcher or thrower - never handled one
Used to find the balls / globes in second hand stores or antique Co ops mislabeled as Christmas tree ornaments but I have not seen one outside of a catalog or online auction for 20+ years

BTW the good ones you were supposed to fill with feathers - to better simulate a bird shot in fight with birdshot...
Store displays (wood framed glass mini cabinets) are unobtainium or unicorns now
