New gun cleaning item for me,,,,
We bought a couple rolls of those blue paper shop towels. Used one to clean the new AR. Was quite impressed,absorbent,no lint,did not fall apart. Did a great job.
That's what we'll be using from now on. When finished they go right into outdoor trash.
We use to use cut up bath/dish towels,T-shirts,ect and launder and re-use. We caught so much hell from you all (rightfully so,we needed it) about the fire safety issue of oily rags and such that we've been in search of a new method. Feel we found it. Thanks.

I reuse rags.
When done cleaning they go into a metal trash can half full of water with a snug lid.
This keeps fire from being an issue. Then once a month i put them in the washing machine with a little dawn plus the regular detergent.
When finished washing I let them hang dry.
Never had an issue.0 -
The original recycled cloth red shop rags / automotive rags still have their place and can be useful
I remember when one gun cleaning supply manufacturer bought / acquired the waffle pattern patches normally encountered at the pharmacy covered in stridex or used to remove make-up from the face
And sold them for use as gun cleaning rod usage bore patches - and they worked quite well
Blue wonder should be on hand and I love the little stainless steel appearance metal bowls that are magnetic

I have used about every thing over the years ,
many years (35 or 40 at least ) ago a neighbor gave me a roll of the material they make baby / hand / wipes out of must have been 500 feet x 2 feet I gave a bunch away and spent evenings watching TV cutting cleaning patches out of it . I think there is still a small part of the roll left around here ,
he gave rolls of it away to many people If I remember it was trash to the company , something about being damaged it would not work thru the machine rollers that cut it to size0 -
Those blue towels ought to work good in the barrel. I'd be cautious about using them on blued surfaces. They feel a little bit abrasive. That's why they should clean a bore better than plain patches. I've been buying white flannel a yard at a time from W-M and doing what D-R does. I get out the long wall paper scissors and get to cuttin'. 0 -

What if you put a bit of dish soap in your dirty rag storage barrel? I'd think it would help break down the oil a bit prior to running them through the washer.0 -
I've been using the Blue Scott Shop Towels for probably 12 years now; I use them all around the house for many purposes including guns. We buy them in the 12 Roll packs at Sam's. 0 -
Joe they work great. I use them when I use Flitz to polish a gun. I use them any time I clean a gun and I probably clean eight or ten a week. I use Southern Bloomer patches and the blue towels are no more abrasive than the patches. I clean almost every gun I put on the auction side cause they have to be spotless. Any dust or dirt will show up in the photos. 0 -
