I never really liked the SXS guns. Looks like you are aiming down the 4" side of a 2X4 . Much rather have a O/U . 0 -
I?ve owned SxS and loved them..need to get one again. The only O/U gun I?ve ever owned is my Bond Arms Derringer and it?s a fun gun. 0 -

That's a tough one for me...
For upland game bird hunting: ptarmigan and pheasant and duck and quail I prefer an over under platform - stack those boys...
For trap and skeet I am somewhat of a philistine or pariah in that I prefer single bbl pump guns - busting clays and for some reason turkey shoots or turkey hunting requires a mono bbl pump action platform
For stew meat or varmints (rabbits and chucks and groundhogs and squirrels and rats) I like a plain old fashioned single bbl single shot break open or possible a mono bbl tube fed .410 platform if I am feeling fancy
I have only hunted with and field carried a SXS double bbl platform once - a trip to Maryland to hunt snow goose
There is just something ineffable and correct about a perazzi MX5 or a win 101 or a citori lightning in my hands.
SXS horizontal doubles are works of art in many cases - I simply do not hunt with them and have only just rarely shot rounds of trap with them.
That's IMHO and is by no means scientific - just one man's observations apropos of nothing...

My favorite bird gun is the SxS.
"aiming down the 4" side of a 2x4"is actually an advantage in the thickets or on overcast days.
The SxS kept me from limiting out on quail too early in the day. I ran a Rem 1100 skeet choke one year and spent most of my days as "the dog handler" in areas where I couldn't shoot pheasants.0 -
I do believe that the double barrel SXS: 1. carries better and is faster to acquire sight, 2. is faster to reload, 3. feels more lively in the hands. 0 -
I carry a SXS 20 for purely sentimental reasons - Dad passed away in 1987 but the only shotgun that he ever carried afield was a Lefever Nitro Express double barrel. I think that's as good a reason as any for preferring one over the other. At least it is for me. 0 -
I have both, and prefer the over/under.
I seem to be able to adjust for the elevation difference of an O/U better than the windage difference of a S x S when shooting skeet or sporting clays.0 -
my early 1980's Citori hunter O/U 12 ga. ,26" barrels, my most used and favorite.
O/U shotguns point so easy, even though I have other types, O/U 's are my choice.0 -

When I sold most of my guns, I kept one shotgun. It's a delightful Spanish 20-ga SxS my wife gave me for my birthday 30 years ago - the only gun she ever bought for me. Can't sell a gift, but I'd have kept it anyway because it's beautiful and a five-pound joy to carry. 0 -

I used to have both.
Sold, or gave away all my O/U's, and most of my SxS's.
Kept my great grandfather's old hardware store damascus,SxS, cause it was my great-grandfather's.
And kept a century arms coach gun with exposed hammers.

I like both-I was pheasant hunting earlier today with my Red Label.
I have also used side by sides in the past but only a couple times for pheasant. But I remember a hunt with a Parker VH choked full and full and a very long shot on a rooster years ago.
I remember a farmer friend and his older son both using old doubles on pheasants and them both shooting very well in the early 1970's. His younger son was about my age and passed away at 23 from Hodgkins Disease about the same time my own dad passed away in the mid 1980's.
The best thing though, was spending a little time with my 2 sons bird hunting earlier today. I've used lots of guns but as my sons get older, I know my hunts with them will get to be less and less often.
We were talking about wanting to do a North or South Dakota Pheasant hunt next year before I get too old to beat the bushes with them.
I hope we can make it happen. And I won't care if am am carrying an old single shot.0
