Watched "Quest For Fire" in front of a electric
heater last night. Went out and about yesterday. Stopped off at Best Buy and in their cheap bin I saw the DVD. While I was there the joint looking more like Sears Appliance Room I looked for a electric heater. Since y'alls kind a talked me in to looking for electric instead of kerosene. Didn't have much other than something smaller than a toaster so I went to Walmart. Heard bad weather was a coming.
Got to Walmart and I saw something bigger. The choices were between a small ice box looking one or a standing coil element one. All the rest were small or oil filled. Oil filled never seem to last more than a season. Anyways the ice box looking thing was $3.00 more and didn't look like it would burn my place down.
Plugged it in and it has "temp. control" but no fan control so even at max heat setting of 85? the fan kicks out a warm fart like air. $75 after tax and this is what I get? I think I'll take it back and get the Kerosene one if they still have it at ACE.

I'd recommend a Quartz element infrared heating unit. I just ordered one to replace my last. (lasted 4-5 years.) 5120 BTU'S very small footprint. $95. (Comfort Glow)
I am exploring the option of replacing the Quartz heating elements in my last unit.
I have a stand alone Kerosene heater as Emergency back up if the power goes out. It throws off about 12-15,000 BTU' s. If I have to use it, I do not care about the negligible smell associated with Kerosene. It will heat up my entire 3 story house very quickly. I do have a Carbon Monoxide detector.
I also have two oil filled radiator units, have been solid heating units. Have had each about 7-9 years at least. Still going strong. Each are going in a seperate room just now. Highly recommend.

have double quartz rod heaters at home and one at the lake place...quiet and efficient...temp control 2 temps, top being 1500 watts.. use a baseboard type oil heater in a basement room 1K watt.... reccomend 12 gauge wiring and 20 amp wall plug for using these as you will get a temp rise at the wall plug..... 0 -
A 120 VAC plug in heater can only draw about 1500 watts. It will produce about 5,100 BTU. It does not matter how hot the air seems it is still producing that amount of heat. If you want to feel the heat get a small ceramic heater and point it at your feet. 0 -
Quest for fire? Really, the all time worst Rae Dawn Chong movie ever? OK I have never actually seen another Rae Dawn Chong movie, but I cannot imagine a worse one. I did like when the elephants dressed as mammoths ran, their tusks flopped as rubber tusks will. 0 -
If you believed the premise, at least we can credit RDC for the first BJ.
I inherently distrust any indoor unvented flame device. But in a power failure, that's pretty much all there is. I wouldn't consider firing one up without a fresh and tested CO detector, though.
My wife's office is always colder than the rest of our downstairs. She had a quartz/fan heater and this year went to one of the Dyson heat/cool fans. No complaints from her yet.0 -
My next house is going to be designed like a TP, where I can just light one of those dura flame logs in the center of the living room and stay warm no matter how long it will take to regain power![:D]
I got suckered into buying one of those electric infrared heaters several years ago. The cost back then was pretty pricey at around 350 bucks and it did OK heating a small room. When I got my electric bill after a very cold winter month, I went into sticker shock and put the heater away in a basement closet, never to be plugged in again!0 -
bpost -I get the 120V 1500W. It was the non adjustable fan that made it feel cold.
He Dog - Huddling in front of half warm heater made me like I was there [:D]. The commentary with Ron Pearlman, Rae Dawn and some other dude was worth the $4.00 [:D]. There is the director commentary but he's French so that's just gonna be annoying.
What amazes me is movies back then took months to do instead of these days of just days or weeks.
Okay seems like "quartz" is the consensus here. There better be a fan control or the deal is off [:D]. I'll look at one of those Amish numbers as well. I hope the Kerosene heater will be there at Ace or at this rate winter will be done.0 -

So I was looking on line and came across Heat4Les$. "Supposedly" they crank out 600? to the typical 200? Walmart special (like the one I just returned). Sure Heat4Les$ costs $200 but they have bits I can replace if it craps out.
So anyone have one of these?
