Barrel break in, 5.56 vs .223?????
the young man that sold me my AR told me to only shoot the 5.56 ammo,for few hundred rounds,before running .223 through it. I don't see how it matters,as it is the case size that is the difference in the two rounds,right?? Does it matter??? Barrel is stamped 5.56 NATO 1-8 twist. Thanks.

Here is a quick summary of the two:
The exterior (physical) dimensions of .223 and 5.56 ammunition are effectively identical.
5.56 ammunition may be loaded to higher pressures than .223 ammunition.
** 5.56mm chambers are dimensionally larger in certain critical areas than .223 chambers.
Given the same ammunition, 5.56 chambers will have lower pressures than .223 chambers.
The point with the two asterisks needs a slight bit more explanation:
5.56 NATO chambers are slightly larger when cut into the AR15 platform barrels. This allows for the ammunition to feed more easily and the ammunition to expand a little more (lower pressure) and then contract for easy extraction. These chambers use a reamer designed especially for the AR platforms. The same concept applies to the AR10 platforms as well. I have two sets of reamers; one for standard chambers in bolt action rifles and the second for AR platforms.
The biggest difference is in the throat and freebore dimensions:

Shoot the ammo you want to shoot. .223 in a 5.56 chamber is fine but do not shoot 5.56 in a .223 chambered gun. Although rare there could be serious pressure spikes that would ruin your day.0 -

Barrel break in is a myth. No advantage to any system and the fact that there are so many systems tells you it's a hoax. Just shoot it. 0 -
I've found that running my gun dirty increases more consistent accuracy. To a point. 0 -
ILl add just buy ammo by the case online and shoot the same load instead of having odds and ends of whatever the store sells that day. It?s cheaper. No reason to spend more than .30$ per round for brass Fmj. 0
