629 4" Mountain Revolver


But its a mutt gun.



Ok here is the story. I wanted a S&W Mountain Revolver in 44 mag when they 1st came out. The problem was the unit I was in was always deployed or training and I had very little time at home(MY wife loved it BTW[;)])

This was before GB so I had to either find one in a Gun shop or get someone to order me one. I just didn't have the time.

Then when I went to a unit that was not gone all the time I started looking.............WOW they were expensive!

So I found a beat up 629-1 6" at a Gunshow in LA and bought it. Then I was looking on fleabay and found a 4" Mountain revolver barrel in 44mag some guy had taken off.

I bought it.

Then I took all the parts to Clarks Custom Guns in LA and had him put them together and do a action job on the gun. He did a great job on it and redid the forcing cone and some other stuff(He also tuned up a M58 I had).

I did not get it bead blasted or anything so the frame and barrel finish don't match but this is the best shooting and carrying gun I have.

But its kind of ugly and not worth much as it is.

    I have a nice U.S. Model 1917 S&W with U.S. and British proof
    markings. At the ready house protection.

    Went to the Range last Thursday and fed the 17 some Hardball
    and 180 and 200gr semi wadcutters. It seems like the 17
    likes the 180gr the best. Real nice single action trigger pull,
    but the double action, well is smooth but heavy. I just do not
    want to change from original unless a spring would help.

    Are you sure your 66 is a 2" not a 2 1/2"?
    If it is a 2" its ether a special order or was cut down at some point in time.
    I have both a 2 1/2" and 4" S&W ND, the 2 1/2" is my EDC.
    My favorite is a 6" S&W 686, however my 8 3/8" 629-1 is the most accurate pistol I have ever shot.

    I have very similar, old style cylinder release and no hole. Mine is a 629-3 Classic with the firing pin on the hammer where it belongs[;)]

    Just teasing Joe.

    Mine has a 2x Leupold on it and it was my deer killer for years. In 1997 I started hunting with a handgun. I started out with a TC in 30-30 but then I got the 629, scope it and never looked back.

    Great gun and the weight soaks up the recoil.

    Have one that is a bit unusual- not a high dollar gun- never was. Picked it up as part of a trade. It is an Iver Johnson hammerless top break in .32 S&W. Made in 1931.


    The little 3 inch blued revolver was in its box, and does not appear to have been fired since leaving IJ. Bluing is starting to go plum colored, but is still 100%. (Worls class? [:p])

    I have a beater S&W 686 that would be my go-to gun if I had to grab one and go.
    It's way more accurate than I am.
