    Some will provide a letter stating the history of a firearm. Winchester Smith & Wesson and Colt and probably others. Can be interesting and valuable when selling a vintage firearm.

    OK then! Is it just a simple matter of contacting the mfg. and asking if a certain firearm qualifies as "vintage"? Are there costs involved, voluniness amounts of forms to fill out or what is the process? Again, Thanks

    there are cost for these letters I HAVE PAID AS MUCH AS $250.00FOR ONE WITH INTERESTING HISTORY ALSO DATE MADE MIGHT DETERMIN IF c&r LEGAL OR NOT.MOST TIMES YOU CAN DO IT BY PHONE CALL AND GIVING A BILLING INFORMATION

    I have letters from S&W which cost $60 each and letters from Colt which cost $75 each. What they show is from the manufacturing records the original configuration of the gun, when it shipped and to whom it was shipped. A Smith Victory of mine was shipped to the Navy, a plus for value. A Colt Combat Commando was shipped to a Military contractor who provided handguns to security guards for military contractors for the most part. Not a big plus for value (as one say shipped to the OSS), but an interesting example of another facet of what military firearms did during the war.

    One value is showing that the gun remains in its original configuration and has not had grips replaced or other alterations which would detract from value. And the history can be interesting, and sometimes not very interesting at all.
