Question for you guys who wear western boots
My 19 year old is a big fan of country music and loves to go to dances and dance with them cute country girls. I cannot fault his thinking one little bit!![:D]
When he goes he wears my cowboy boots but complains that they are just a little small for his feet. He has asked for a pair of boots for Christmas and being a sweet loving father I'm planning on getting a pair for him. Our local western shop doesn't have hardly anything under 225 to 250 bucks and most of what they have under 300 bucks isn't very attractive. Normally this wouldn't bother me but he will wear these boots maybe 8 times a year. Just seems like a lot of money for no more than he will use them.
Is there a site online that sells decent quality boots at a more reasonable price?? Is there a brand of boots that is of reasonable quality but doesn't cost an arm and a leg??

Depends on what style of boots he wants.
Around here in the Hill Country of Texas, lots of folks wear Justin Ropers and Justin Lacers and Ariats.
After all these years, I switched from Justin boots to Wolverine lace up boots. Maybe not as stylish, but a heck of a lot more comfortable to me.

Last pair I bought was in 1994 so I have no Idea. Got mine for a fantastic price. The place where I worked also owned a Western Wear Store. I got a 25% discount for that and they were half off. A really nice pair of Tony Lama right at $100 then.

There are tons of boots under 150 bucks. Start goggling. Also, you cannot just go buy cowboy boots for someone. All brands fit different to each person. They should "Slide" just a little bit on his foot, not to be tight and uncomfortable. I wear boots almost every day. Look at a slouch type boot for him. They are soft and comfortable, dressy and cost under a hundred bucks. Boots can get ridiculous. I have seen boots at 5,000 to start, for a custom pair. When we were in Nashville, you could buy two pairs for 150. Look online and if you are able, take him after Christmas and let him pick his boots. Oak 0 -

As mentioned above, Cavender's is a good store for boots. I bought my Lucchese Handmade Classics from Cavender's, but they were considerably more than your target range. However, Cavender's has a wide selection of makes and styles. 0 -

Cowboy boots are something I wouldn't buy online.
Last pair I bought I went to a boot store and told the salesman I wanted a gray pair with a moderate rounded toe.
He grabbed one pair in the size I normally wear and it fit ok, but a bit tight across the ball of my feet. He grabbed a different brand and it fit better, but still a little loose in the heel.
The third pair fit like a custom-made pair. I wore them for several years, had them resoled and would still be wearing them if a cat hadn't used them for her sandbox while I was recovering from getting my knees replaced.[:(!][:(!][:(!]
But if you're interested in just something for occasional use got to a store. Wear two pair of socks, one thin nylon over his normal socks and try on some boots until he finds some that feel pretty good.

If your finished with your boots and want him to have them have him stand in a tub of water for 15-20 minutes soaking them well, then get out poring excess water out then slip back on, then carry on his normal duties through-out the day until dry, the boots leather will stretch and mold to his feet perfectly, afterwards treat the leather with a good conditioner. I'm a 50+yr cowboy boot wearer and speak the truth, I do this even when my "new" boots fit well at purchase time too [;)] 0 -
I've never been able to buy the same size pair cowboy boots. They run different sizes even with the same manufacturer and style. take him down and have him try them on until he finds a pair that are comfortable 0 -

Wore boots exclusively for over 30 years and can attest to the fact that a properly fitted pair is heaven on earth . Find a western wear store and try on different pairs to find the right fit 0 -

Honestly, I've never tried it on anything but leather and don't believe I'd try it either, those I'd try to find the perfect fit at a store. My leather boots, I work, hunt, attend church, funerals, social events all in the same boots, keep them clean, polished/treated they will last a very long time. My current wearing boots have been resoled around 3 times and probably re-heeled a few times more but that's everyday wear over 18-19 years. I own a pair of ostrich which are fine but I really like good leather & workmanship and feel more comfortable in them. If your sons going to play urban cowboy 6-7 times a year a low priced well fitting pair off the shelf should do him fine. Note: a duck hunting accident (falling in the water) is how I discovered the water trick on new boots......a un-planned spur of the moment type hunt [:D]0 -

As advised, go to a store and try them on first.
Also, if your boots he borrows have a roping heel and he chooses a walking heel make sure he wears them enough to get accustomed to the heel before hittin' the dance floor.0 -
A 10 1/2. I tried C-list. Some really nice boots for a little bit of nothing but 10s and 10 1/2s are such a common size I think someone lists them and the boots are gone the same day. I even found NIB Tony Lama's at $75!! Makes me wonder how they are shop lifting boots!! 0 -
Take your time and get quality boots that fir properly. Western dancing is not the place for sore feet and you to look foolish. 0 -
If just going dancing I wear justins, if im going out like to a wedding I have a pair of nice justins that where only around 200 bucks. mine have mostly come from Cavender's boot city.

I recommend trying an online seller that offers free returns. Sites like Zappos and 6pm come to mind. Also, Amazon will start offering free returns on a lot of stuff soon. I have bought boots from all 3 places with great results. Look for brands like Justin, Ariat, Lucchese, and even Rocky. I have never paid over about $90.....for boots that would be $200-$300 at the store.
Retailers like Boot Barn and Cavenders tend to be a huge rip-off. If you have a Big R or Tractor Supply, you may find some clearance bargains. Academy Sports usually even carries a small selection.

No, lizard and snake does not stretch like leather. Trust me I know, I tried it on a pair of lizard skins that were a little tight on me and it didn't help0 -
Oh, and one other thing to keep in mind - if his primary concern is dancing, you probably want to look for slick leather bottoms rather than rubber out-soles. 0 -
If you have a Tractor Supply near you check them out.
They sell Justins for a decent price. Or you could checkout Sheplers on the internet. I used to buy from them all the time when they sent me their catalog. Now that I have to go hunt for them on the internet I don?t.
Most younger folks like a flattened square toe these day. I always wear a midium round toe roper with a saddle vamp across the top. It?s just my preference, and a low heal roper slids better on the saw dust...[;)]. They won?t wear longer, but for dancing a leather sole is best.
