Who Has Been Lost In The Woods
When i was 14 to 17 a friend and i went squirrel hunting in woods we had never been in before.
We went hunting after school and we were easing through the woods being really quite. We would walk a little while and then stay still for a while.
We went through a little patch that was wet. We did not think anything about it.
When we turned around to go to our truck there was a swamp between us and the truck. We tried going around the swamp but it started getting dark so we turned around and walked out of the woods.
The woods were about a mile and a half deep but where we came out it was about a 6 mile walk to get back to the truck.
When i got home it was about 8:30 pm and my Dad was not happy. He was worried i got hurt hunting. He knew i was going hunting and i am never late and if i am its no more than 5 or 10 minuets.
I told him what happened and he was ok. Around 1980 there was no phone to call and let my parents know what happened.
We were not lost it was just a long walk to get back to the truck.

i picked it up when a voice in the brush yelled at me to pick up my damn trash. it was a fellow hunter that had walked a huge circle too that day, lost, until he saw my wrapper, then found his.

Back in the 1970s my boss had to go to a school in Newark. One day after school he was walking to his car and one of the local gangs tried to catch him. He made it by the skin of his teeth but he outran them. As soon as he got in his car he went directly to the police station. He went in and told they guy at the desk what happened. The police action was the cop looked him in the eye and said ?you should know better than to be in Newark after 5:00 pm?.
Wise advice.
The first 'turn around' wasn't bad. I ended up on a 4 lane one way street divided by a large boulevard from the 4 lane one way headed in the other direction. The boulevard was large enough to mistake for a park; neatly mowed and dotted with large shade trees. I simply made a series of left turns and got back on the expressway.
The 2nd time was a bit more exciting (and it was well past 5:00). As I made my way to the first left, I noticed many, many, many police cars. As I completed the lefts and headed back to the expressway, I noticed all the police officers hiding behind the large trees, their open car doors, etc. Yep, I was in the middle of a shoot out!!! Neither I nor the rental car got hit, and I made damn sure I didn't make that mistake again. (mostly by flying into Allentown Pa since I was headed to Western NJ anyway)0 -
never lost but bewildered abit once in the dense fog and had a hard time finding truck, I also took wrong trail once and ended up walking in dark with no light in woods getting out to road and came out about 2 miles down road from where parked. 0 -
been turned around in the woods a time or two but not truly lost. As to driving as long as you have gas in the tank and a running car you are not lost just "misplaced" When you are out of gas and have no idea where you are then you are indeed lost 0 -

we hunt with a guy who has hunted with us for 30+ years, he could get lost going out on the porch to pee. best one was one year he was doing a small drive in a small hollow and got lost but kept saying on the radio there were dead dear everywhere, seems he had walked past the same dead doe 3 times in less than 20 minutes.......0 -
Three weeks in a Night Land-Nav pre Ranger course, and yes I was monetarily confused several times, but never lost.
I always knew I was down range on an Army base, so if I didn?t find my way back home they would come hunting for me, and you just didn?t want to be found if you were the one being hunted in that situation...[8D]
