Pistol hunting for deer
As Im departing TX my friends have decided next fall to meet up in Missouri to deer hunt.
The ringleader is a big bow hunter but we will miss bow season due to conflicts.
He doesn?t particularly want to hunt with rifles because its ?too easy? so I was thinking pistols would be fun. This is the same group of guys I shoot USPSA with here as well so another reason pistols make sense.
All that said- whats a solid deer hunting pistol caliber?
Id prefer a gun I could use for other things so im thinking maybe something in 460 Rowland.

Many years ago I filled a doe tag with my winkie hanging out.
Stopped to relieve myself, leaned my shotgun against a tree and a doe came along. I drew my Ruger Security Six and shot her in the head.
tucked in zipped up and field dressed the deer.0 -
One thing to consider are the laws where you will be hunting. Some states require a certain barrel length, power factor and caliber. 0 -

Rule Number One: Be a good shot! It is all about bullet placement.
I used to use a S&W Model 28, 6" barrel, 158 gr. Hornady XTP on top of a stout charge of 296. Open sights. Bagged about 40 deer, range from 12 feet to over 100 hards. If I had trouble, it was because I didn't put the bullet in the right spot. I never recovered a bullet on a side shot. Shot a big doe coming at me right under the chin and recovered the bullet against the hide near the tail.
But if you want, use a cannon like the .460 S&W Mag. I guess you could miss 'em and still kill 'em with the shock wave!0 -
Where I live, (embarrassment tells me to not specify just where that is) the .22 Magnum is legal.
Insane, irresponsible, etc. etc.,
but legal.
Have hunted with both .357 and .44 magnums. Just had to make real sure I knew my distance limitations under field conditions. With my eyes, and iron sights, that was about 50 yards. Had a scoped .44 Hunter that stretched that out to about 80.0 -
I carry a 44 magnum Ruger Super-RedHawk, with a 8" ported barrel, and a TC pistol scope when deer hunting.
I have dispatched several deer with it over the years. It's a great gun up to 100 yards, and with an aiming stick I'm sure it would be good at longer ranges, though I'm not so sure I wouldn't want to try it.
