With all the restructuring going on the greed is about to rise to the top of the cup. I foresee the automakers elimination of retirement plans. Old and new. Just cut them off. Old Union contracts being thrown aside when the automakers feel like it to file bankruptcy or rename their products.

I hope so. It is the individuals responsibility to fund their future. Pensions are so 1970's. They are obsolete and a business killer.

Labor unions spent 1.713 billion dollars in the 2016 election alone...... now imagine if that money was placed into employee pension funds rather than towards the election of DEMOCRAT candidates. The vast majority of the money was from members dues and nearly all went to the election of DEMOCRATs.
Yes, the same DEMOCRATs who openly create the hostile business climate that is destroying American automobile manufacturing with taxes, regulations, and mandates.0 -
The Unions eventually ran, or tried to run the car companies via union strikes, walkouts, poor decisions, rules and regulations. The result was a gradual reduction in innovation and quality allowing foreign makers to successfully enter the U.S. market to sell to a eager to buy population.
The companies without the Unions might still have gone into bankruptcy, similar to Sears but I think not.0 -

Or for workers who took a job that offered a pension!
If a company wants to eliminate pensions for future hires, they can - those future hires will know that when they start the job.
But for a worker with X number of years into a job to have the pension pulled out from under him, how is that fair? That person can't go back in time and take a different job.
And I'm afraid many of these big businesses are just like state & federal governments - makes poor decision with money and then blame it on the pensions!
And of course everybody who is not in line for a pension believes it!0 -
Union greed has done quite a bit of damage to this country. There was a time for them, they helped forge the middle class but have since stolen from it and undermined it. 0 -

I will agree that there is a lot of bad with the unions. Current auto workers contracts work out very well for them. I assumed it had been this way forever - I was wrong.
I worked with a guy (from Michigan) whose father retired form one of the big 3. I mentioned how he must be doing very well with the fat pension. My co-worker looked at me like I was really stupid and told me that his dad didn't make that much until the last 5 years or so of his career, when good contracts finally kicked in. Apparently his pension was not impressive. Unlike one for a recent retiree.
And as far as quality of US made autos, this has improved dramatically over the years. But that wasn't out of the kindness it was because they had to. The big 3 understand 'planned obsolescence' way better than most - why not make a product you figure will need to be replaced every 3 -5 years? They simply got caught with their pants down when foreign cars got here from manufactures who didn't plan on their cars being replaced so often! The big 3 were smart enough to understand quality had to improve just to stay competitive.
A big part of why so many see foreign cars as better is because the big 3 waited too long to get serious about quality. They make really good stuff now, but I'm afraid it's too little, too late.0 -

A lot of companies have already did this. Just establish another company, file bankruptcy on the old company, move the good assets to the new company, and let the pensions and bad debts go with the old company.0 -

From what I understand it was poor management more than union greed with the big 3.I live in the south and we were always lead to believe that Satan ran all unions when in reality the mill owners could pay starvation wages.The few people that I know who work for unionized companies(UPS,elevator mechanics)are good people that work hard and are well compensated. 0 -

If the average wage for an auto worker is 30.00 per hour and the line puts out a car every 55 seconds and lets just guess that there are 300 people that touch that car ( I doubt there are that many but I am not sure!) at an average of 30.00 per hour . ummm you do the math. you can blame the work force all you want but in my opinion there is a rat in the breadbox!!! 0
