GM closing plants.........
Recon another bailout would help? They said possibly could close as many as five North American plants.

They're in China anyways. Took the bailout and done bailed. 0 -
Was it GM or Ford that was quoted they would be getting out of the "sedan" production and focus on SUV's? Either way one would think the other would soon follow? 0 -

Ford said they are going to shut down all there car line except for the Mustang. GM was talking about doing the same0 -
Ford must have stopped making sedans.I saw the Highway Patrol here in SC is using a Ford vehicle that looks like a square station wagon. 0 -
gm took the money and went to CHINA...their ceo then bragged about it...will never buy another gm product made after 2009 0 -
Is GM and Ford still in the union business? 0 -

It's SUVs now...the need for room for a prisoner compartment and equipment makes the SUV a more practical option, especially at less than a few grand more.0 -

Chevy Volt
Chevy Cruze
Chevy Impala
GM notes that it will be ending production of these cars starting next year. There are also several other cars that will not see U.S. sales starting in 2019. This includes the Cadillac XTS, the Cadillac CT6 and Buick LaCrosse. These cars will still be available for purchase in other countries0 -

The unions ruined the American Automobile Industry...and that is the bottom line.

The Air Quality Control District didn't help. Ford, GM & Chrysler all closed their assembly plants in Kalifornia long ago because of the AQCD.
Later I went to work at O'Keefe & Merritt & again the same thing happened. Unions had nothing to do with it.0 -
The saddest part of this, is the fact that approx. 15,000 American workers will be hitting the unemployment lines![:(]
IMHO, General Motors has become a traitor to our Country's nationality and is now a part of the new world order![:(!]0 -

Just look at the dealerships that will lose sales. If you want to see the future of America check out central Indiana. Use to be 22 GM plants and Guide Lamp along with Delphi. They leveled all plants years ago and approx. 15K or so employees were out of work. Now just a non thriving town of service min. pay work. The once thriving Big 3 has almost crumbled in America.0 -
Shame but blame the management as well. GM saw the writing on the wall years ago. GM failed to compete with Japanese and Euro car makers.
They just cranked out the same old engines and slapped stupid name plates and bodies on the same old frames.0 -

A fact that just can't be argued. In the business world, it is almost impossible to serve two masters equally.
Another fact is quality costs. The costs to sustain a parasitic union are costly. GM decided to "Go Cheap"
The "Go Cheap" methodology made Toyota, Nissan, and the rest of the Asian cars top sellers particularly in the United States where people were sick and tired of buying vehicles that would fall apart before they were paid for.0 -
They say the reason for the closing is because Americans aren't buying sedans any longer. But, the Baltimore plant doesn't make sedans; it makes transmissions & electric motors. The last time I checked, trucks & SUVs still have them.

When younger I used to be loyal to GM always upgrading to a better model.
After they took the bail out and screwed all of the bondholders I vowed to never purchase a GM again and have held to that vow.0 -
If history repeats just about the time we stop making little cars and get everyone into a SUV or larger gas will go up 0 -

All about Labor Cost.Chinese work for pennies a day.Greedy Americans need everything in their Union Contract. Just cheaper business decision. US auto manufacturers have put themselves out of business. Their workers are about the only ones who can afford their new products. Now a medium wage American can buy a newer car made in chiner. the object is the keep the American poor. Just dangle the carrot close enough and they will finance, pay rent and be poor the rest of their lives... Just like in China.0 -
the EPA and gov't regulation/taxes has done more to close down the auto and steel industry than the unions ever have. why wouldn't a company move overseas where they can do as they please 0 -

Yep. The town near me just bought a new Explorer patrol vehicle. They have 4 full time officers and four vehicles.
The town has 1100 residents and is 1.1 square miles.
Must have been some ?free money?.0 -
Good point. The only auto plants Indiana these days are Japanese, one Honda and 2 Toyota. 0 -

Why did they fail to compete? Could it be because the unions would balk at the companies attempts to automate? Even strike or create a slowdown in work? All to save some "repetitive job" that was high paid because of union demands?
Replacing humans with automation may result in LESS jobs in a given area but the alternative is NO JOBS in that area.
For those that are replaced there will be other opportunities. someone will have a job to mfg. / repair / program the automation equipment including robots.0 -
Unions way back were a real God send for workers. Then unfortunately shady type people got involved and they've gone down hill ever since. Too bad. 0 -
This was caused as much by Trump's policies as it was by the marketing moron that continues to run those stooopid "real people, not actors" commercials on a loop that makes you question your sanity for having TV. 0 -
The shrinking middle class with no good paying jobs due to cheap Chinese products and free trade agreements. Thank your politicians that sold our industries off to Foreign nations with/for cheap labor.
Now we have 3-d printing with A.I. robots taking all the jobs we once had as average Americans too! It's recession time soon once again! Even more middle class people going into the poor class here in The USA!
