Things are heating up in the S China sea

I think this can get hot fast. China has bullied the Philippines and Vietnam, Malaysia and some of the other country's have filed suit against China. The Philippines even took them to The World Court and won. But China just said FO and kept building fortification on the Spratly islands which are in either international water or the waters/islands claimed by other country's.
The USN wants to conduct a "Show of Force" in the area. This could provoke China into a shoot out.
My opinion is if that happens China would cease to have a Navy in about 24hrs if we had our forces in place. But it would cost us.

Sam, The Chicoms have a lot of diesel/electric subs. The most modern ones are like a hole in the water. A string of them hovering in the approaches to the fake islands would be a real pain in the ass to a carrier battle group.
We don't have enough Seawolf Class boats to clean them all out. Like you, I'm sure we would prevail, but not without a price.
A simple way to fight is to lay mine fields from the air around the fake islands with JASDF flying Iron Hand or Wild Weasel.
It's one way to cancel the debt we owe China. [:p]0 -

To date, China is the aggressor in the South China Sea, not the US. Military exercises in international waters are not aggressive.
Flying an airplane into a PQ-3 is aggressive.
Sailing a destroyer to within 45 yards of US destroyer is aggressive.
History tells us that appeasement of an aggressor leads to either continued appeasement or war. China knows it cannot defeat the US, and it also knows that it will suffer dearly both militarily and economically.
Interesting that you bring up the Korean model. There has been more progress with the North Koreans these past two years than in the previous 60. Sometimes speaking loudly whilst carrying a big stick is the only thing dictatorial regimes understand.0 -
