Brake ?

Today I had to really step on the brakes to avoid an accident. I ended up on the berm next to another vehicle.

The brakes pedal did not go to the floor but was very soft. Since I was on the berm I opened the hood and checked the fluid level, which was OK.

Truck is a 2002 Silverado, extended cab, 4x4, auto and 5.3 motor.

I'm thinking the power brake booster. It was replaced several years ago, 4 or 5, because I lost brakes going out my driveway. No problems since then. Any other opinions?

    If your brake fluid reservoir is full, and you have not added any, then it probably be your rear brakes.

    I would just pull up a couple of Wheels... one on front and one on the back and check your brake linings...

    When you have your wheels off check your brake lines tooWhen if they are getting old, they can swell up on your brake can't make it feel like the brake pedal the soft

    Have to ask Ever had them Flushed.

    That fluid they use collects water.

    Get mine done every few years on my truck. Cause the 1st time I noticed it the brakes had locked up cause of rust. Cost me new Calipers and disks. Mine is a 200o GMC with the 5.3.

    PS best to have a shop do it if you have anti lock brakes they have a machine for it.

    There was a recall on 1999-2002 trucks for a faulty ABS system. The wheel sensors corrode, activate the ABS, then no brakes because it doesn't sense the wheel turning.
    Salt on the roads was the major cause, and whatever the fix was, it continues in later models. The bad part is you won't notice it until you have to do a panic stop, like you did.

    You don't "lose brakes" due to a failed booster. You lose power brakes.

    my money is on a blown line..it will take several pumps to empty the master cyl...those gm's were terrible for rotten brake and fuel lines did the brake or ABS lite come on? it should have

    I found a broken line in front of the drivers side rear wheel. ABS light didn't come on.

    Thanks for every ones suggestions.

    I would do the flush too.
