Several people on here were talking about ground bees. I read the post like i do most post and thought nothing else about it.
Friday i cut the grass with the riding mower. My sister in law has moved in with us because of her health and she can not live off of 600 dollars a month. She is 53 and got cancer when she was 2 and she has never been right since then.
Anyway yesterday she asked me to go on the deck and see why there were so many flies beside the fence. I walked over to where the flies were and they were ground bees.
I went outside last night a poured a gallon of gas down the hole. Today there were about 30 bees around the hole. They would land for a second or less. So i poured gas again. That got a few more.
Then i got a can of wasp spray and that does not work very well with ground bees. It was like pepper spray for us.
So after the can was gone i tie wrapped my lawn mower handle closed so it would run without me. I put it over the hole and killed some more.
I have about 20 or 30 left i guess.
How could they build a nest that big in 3 days? Friday i cut within 3 feet from the hole and they did not come out or were not there at the time.
I find it hard to believe they could build a house like that so quickly.
I am putting the blame of the ground bees to where it should be placed at the feet of GB people.[:(]
At least i have not been bit yet.[:)]

Next time, if you're away from a structure dump a half gallon of gas mixed with a little oil and drop a match. Plug the hole with a rock.

Good with the gas, (1/2 gallon is plenty.) Why no match?0 -
the most 'fun' I had with them was when a bunch decided to built a nest ..........in the intake to my chipper/shredder...........started that puppy up and let it run. by the time they figured out something was wrong it was too late [:D] 0 -

You kind of throw a match as you walk away, leaving the area.
It's pretty simple really. (Especially when 90-95% of the gas is in a hole in the ground. It's not like it explodes or anything. YVMD.0 -
They don't bite, they sting. Leave them alone, with gas in the ground they will either leave or die. No doubt you got the queen, and ends the colony. 0 -

Never encountered a hole of bugs that could not be taken care of with some off road diesel.. and that is not lighting it. I have done more than a few. 0 -

Bumblebees generally don't swarm someone and, They nest on the ground, but do not burrow like many ground nesting bees. They commonly use old mouse nests, some will use fiberglass insulation, I have had them nest in 4" of grass mulch under trees and had my hands in their nests without harm. They are not very aggressive.
Colletes inaequalis is one of the most abundant ground nesting bees. While each female is solitary and digs a hole exclusively for her use, commonly many nest in close proximity, sometimes thousands. Usually they are not very aggressive either.
Yellow jackets are wasps, they are ground nesters, they are colonial and they are aggressive.0 -
2nd with mixing oil with the gas and lighting it. It will burn like a candle for hours above ground and everything below ground will be dead. Thats one way to kill ants here in AZ 0
