Wife asked me an odd question.
We were driving home from the Goat Festival in Perryville, AR yesterday and out of the blue she asked me which of my guns was my favorite. She usually has no interest in discussing guns so this was surprising.
This question gets asked often on dicussion forums and I can't give a specific answer. I like them all or I wouldn't have bought them. But I thought about it and said my Cogswell & Harrison double rifle.
I saw this rifle on consignment in a shop when I was 18. It was priced at $1,300 and it may as well have been a million. I was making a buck sixty-five an hour and a gun that expensive was out of the question.
Five years later it was back and for sale once again. Now the price was $1,800. I have no idea if that was a fair value or not. I wanted it badly. Besides, by then I was making the princely sum of five bucks an hour and I felt flush. I had two twenties in my wallet and that would hold it for 30 days. I called in markers, sold several guns, and scraped up every dime I could and bought the double rifle.
Ammo is long out of print so I have to form cases and load my own. The gun is a hoot and a half to shoot and the barrels print very close together at 100 yards. Stolen in 1985 it was recovered a few months later by a cop who saw a sleazy looking guy offering it around at a gun show for $200.
Hard to believe I've had it for 40 years. No clue as to what it might be worth.

My favorite is an old Perazzi TM-1. I went through about $5,000.00 worth of trap guns (Browning GTX, BT99 and others) that I shot well, but not good enough. The TM-1 was the one until the stock broke. I had won some trap shoots with it, and shot 200 straight targets so it was worth it to me to make the trip to Portland for a custom stock fitted to me. Three trips, Soft Touch installed, and it shoots like a dream.
I went 7 years without shooting trap and I picked it up and shot 24 out of 25 first time out.0 -

..I can relate. I'd bought a series 180 Mini 14 (1976 birth date)
when I was making about $7 per hour for $150. Scoff at the Ruger
if you will but that was one of the most accurate rifles I ever owned.
I needed $150 to finance a ski trip and sold it for that amount.

A really neat rifle, Doc! I took a quick glance online and saw a rifle just like yours (except it carried a scope) for over $14 grand.
One thing about the big doubles is that they don't get shot much as a rule.0 -

Be glad you sold it. I had one that the previous owner had grafted on a shotgun style folding stock. When Kalifornia came up with the original assault rifle law I would have had to register it because of the stock. I tried to find a new stock & that's when I discovered that it is impossible to get many of the replacement parts for a 180 rifle so I took it to Las Vegas & sold it at a gun show.
I found out there are parts that break on a regular basis & are irreplaceable. You are then left with a very poor putter. Avoid the 180s like the plague.0 -

It's Arkansas. We have festivals for everything. The Goat Festival was packed. Vendors were se4lling goat related art and products, there was a costume contest (for goats), live music, it was quite the doings. Free parking, free admission, hot dogs were 2 bucks. Such a deal! 0
