Selling a pistol out of state
Hi all,
I'm relatively new to selling pistols online and hoping the community here could answer a question. I'm a Michigan resident with a CPL.
Michigan is a state where rifles and shotguns do not need to be registered but pistol do. Therefore, if I sell a pistol to a private citizen / dealer in Michigan, we both fill out a pistol sales record and turn it into the sheriff and then the transaction is done and dusted. However, if I sell a pistol online to a person In a different state the situation is a bit different: my assumption is their FFL would do the transfer paperwork which would entail informing their state government/sheriff of the buyer's newly purchased pistol. But on my end I am unaware and can't seem to find what the procedure is for informing my sheriff/state government that I no longer own the pistol. Is there a process for doing this or is it even required?

You simply write a letter to the Michigan State Police with the serial number of the pistol you sold. You might want to include copies of any paperwork you receive from the out of state FFL. The MSP will then take that pistol off your list.
When in doubt, contact the MSP. They have our registration records.
Edit: or you could sell through your local FFL and let them handle the paperwork. You still need to contact the MSP.0 -

Michigan has handgun registration. Not rifles or shotguns. Please don't make it worse than it is.0 -
If you are selling on line, be sure to a wording to your ad that the buyer must insure the FFL will accept a firearm from a private seller. Some will not, almost all will require a copy of your DL to verify identity for their records. You may not ship via USPS. 0
