    I had wanted one of the SA 22's forever. Finally broke down and bought one in 22 short about 5 months ago and I love it. Cycles everything I have put in it and is quieter than my pellet rifle with CB caps.

    As hard as 22lr got to find, shorts were worse so I put in a sufficient hoard at 4-6 cents/rd.

    edit: and I like that the scope mounts cantilevered to the barrel so you don't have to re-zero after re-assembly following take down.

    I used to maintain that it was simply impossible to win a Locust Fork auction, but I finally did. Went pretty far in a couple Mark Christian auctions, but never won. I've bid on more than a few of yours, but you draw high dollars. We shall see.

    I'm not doubting you Dave and thank you. I checked three sources and they all said 1940 but I am usually happy just getting close with Winchester S/N.[:)] I remember recently getting three different dates on one gun. Browning can be as bad.

    after looking at your your mod. 12 I had to go and get mine out , it's not a Heavy Duck just a plain old 2 3/4" 28" full or was, at some point it had the Multy-Choke adjustable choke added to the barrel , pretty darn good shape for its age , ser.# on mine is 8826xx if some one wants to tell me when it was made would be great

    redhawk, yours was made in the last quarter of 1940.

    Ricci, With a couple of exceptions, most sources are still using the info that Madis compiled, and what he didn't have, he just made up. The numbers I'm giving you, are from the Polishing Room Records. That's when and where the serial number was stamped, and the "actual" DOM.
    Bert H. found the micro film with the Polishing Room Records in the Cody Museum basement. He and Larry Shennum published the records in "The Red Book of Winchester Values".
    You might ask what's the diff in one year?
    Can be a big difference to collectors. One made in the first year would have a premium. Then you have production numbers. In 1932, there was 14,120 Model 12's made. In 1933, there was only 71 made. A Model 94 made Jan 1st of 1899 is a C&R. The one made Dec 31st of 1898, is an Antique and brings a premium.
    DOM, received in warehouse, and year sold can all be different too.
    redhawk's gun "could be" an example of one made late in the year, received in the warehouse a month or two later in the next year, and not shipped until as late as the year after that.
    I think the Browning workers were smoking some pretty good stuff in the 80's. I have a Citori FeatherLite 12ga that the serial number letter prefix says is a 3" mag Field.

    when I first purchased that old shotgun I was just going to turn it into a short barreled old house gun but after I got it home and had time to think about that, it just seems wrong to chop it , so its going to stay just as it is

    Sunday evening is the best time to end an auction for the seller
