Car titles

Mr. Perfect
Does anyone here know:
I want to transfer the title of the car my oldest drives to her name.
Will she have to buy new tabs for it? I should note that the tabs are current.

Car is licensed in WA.

    From what little I still remember. Tags should still be good.


    But in your state with tax you may owe tax on a title transfer and there may be a fee to change over the registration to her also.

    In Florida the tags stay with who ever bought them, they don't go with the vehicle.
    New owner, new tags.

    in wva a parent can gift a car to child without any taxes on the transfer only title fee, but as others stated the tags are in your name your child will need them in theirs state may not transfer to them. best call them

    Gave one of my sons a car and just let him drive it until the license tag expired on my birthday. After that it was his baby. Here in Michigan there is no sales tax on car transfers between immediate family members. Of coarse, this car was a gift anyway so there was no money for the state to suck on.

    Used to be that if you sold a vehicle that had current tabs, the buyer only paid to transfer the title, and then run out the tabs before buying new ones.

    My wife informed me a couple months ago that has all changed. Now it looks like your daughter will have to buy new tabs, regardless of how long the current ones are good.

    This state needs to be sued over that, because that is theft. If your daughter has to re-tab the car, you should be due a refund for any unused time on your tabs.

    Depends on your state, call DMV. I know in Utah we have to get new tags on a vehicle anytime it is transferred.

    But I just bought a vehicle for my son, and I'm just running on his tags until they expire. I carry the insurance on the car, but it is still registered in his name. I just had him sign the title over to me and write out a bill of sale in case anything ever happens if I get in a wreck, he can show he is no longer liable for it...

    I've always had my vehicle's title listed "my name "OR" one on my kids names". This allows giving it to them without all the expenses of retitling.

    This is totally my guesswork, so take it for what it?s worth:

    No matter how you (or your daughter) acquired the vehicle the vehicle?s registration has to agree with the vehicle?s title. If you simply add her name to the title as an ?or survivor? you shouldn?t have to change the tags of tabs. If you remove your name from the title and add her as the ?owner? you probably will have to.

    In most states, you do not want to let insurance lapse until the registration with the new owner's title has been processed by MVA.

    I think HPD is correct. I'm fairly certain I had to do that three years ago when I bought my van, even though it had new plates and tabs on it at the time.

    New Mexico too, depends upon your state regs.
