Knives - EDCs - multi tools - blades talk thread
What do you have - what do you like - what do you collect - do you make your own - cheap every day use utility tools versus expensive collectables or narrow focus specialty use pieces - fixed blade or folders - new or used or vintage or new (time period preference)...
Heck even bayonets and multi tools - what ever floats your boat - share a little with us - let's talk about it.
I grew up loving the SMKW catalog and always liked having affordable lower end to moderate cost / quality pocket knives around - usually smaller EDC folders with pocket clips
However I do like:
Gil hibben throwers (the smaller single edge monolithic one piece naked design with the nice quality leather sheath)
Benchmade EDC folders - I have 2 older "piledriver" marked variants
Al Mar fixed blade hunters or mil spec designs (I have 2 from the late 70's)
Cricket - I like their brand - I have several folders and some fixed obakes
I like my multi tools as well

For EDC I like a large knife.
I want one with a clip so it stays in place.
I like Non stainless steel, preferably D2 or similar.
I like a liner lock and flipper so one hand operation is easy.
I like Japanese styled knives because they have a neutral handle and feel good in my hand.

I remember when these 1st came out. I was a Ranger Instructor at the Mountain Phase of Ranger school in Dahlonega Ga.
Every Ranger student had one or two and most lost them by the 4 th day of the patrolling phase.
I bet I picked up 200 of them in the 3 years I was an RI and have never bought one(I never gave anything back to a Student who lost something unless it was important or mission essential, they need to learn to keep up with their equipment).
I gave many away and kept about 20 of them. I still have a bunch in several different styles.
I like the old Gerber over the Leatherman but both are good.
When I was still in and I was deployed I carried 3 knives, and one was always a Gerber Multi tool.0 -
Fighting Knife
In 1985 I was a Buck Sgt(E-5) and graduated Jump Master School at Ft Bennning Ga.
I got a buddy I knew to drive me into town because I wanted to get some stuff to take back to WA where I was stationed.
Back then Ranger Joes was the place to go.
I went in and looked at all the knives they had. At the time I carried a Kbar on my LCE but it had broken at the tang(I abused it).
I saw this knife and had to have it:

I carried it for 21 years in the Army. It has 1 Combat Jump, 3 wars and a bunch of time in the bush on it. It has been all over the world, to more countrys than I can even name. I cannot tell you how many static line jumps its made but at least 500. It has over 1000 HALO/HAHO jumps. Its made some bad landings with me but it has always walked away[;)] It been in the Pacific, Atlantic, Caribbean, Mediterranean and Indian Oceans. Its seen the Congo River, the Tigris, the Euphrates, The Blue and white Nile, The Amazon and the Mississippi Rivers. Its been to the top of Mt Rainer and Mt Kenya and numerous other hill in between.
I never used it on a person but I did cut a few goats necks with it and it did fine.
These were great knives with very good steel, they would get sharp and stay sharp. You could abuse them and use them. Great for opening MRE bags or cutting sticks to make a cover for your jungle hammock.
I would not trade it for a Corvette[:0]

A Bush knife.
I was stationed in Panama. This was my only overseas assignment.
I was in a pretty good unit and I love the Jungle.
Before I went I wanted a good jungle knife. I had been to Panama 5 times for training and I was there for Just Cause so I knew what to expect.
Machetes are nice but they are too long IMO and take up too much space.
I went with this and it was perfect
The Cold Steel Ghurka
Mine was not the Carbon V steel but it was just a tool steel. It got sharp and stayed that way.
It out cut any machete I ever saw and was short and small enough to carry. I put a snaplink in the belt hook and just snapped it to my LCE when I needed it.0 -

AL MAR Sere Older series (1980-1990's) in 3 sizes. The big folder is 4 /12" blade, almost toooo big for a folder (went to Iraq).

I have L.T. Wright, Bark River, Benchmade, Spyderco, Case, K bar, SAC (Swiss Army Knives)' Buck,Emerson, etc. I like blades and have a bunch of them. I have them in the bedroom, both bathrooms, all over my office, and in the car. Did I mention I like blades?[:)] 0 -

Of course as some of you know I started working in the gunshop at a very young age - sweeping up and wiping off the star progressive commercial reloading machine or emptying the trash...
Also back in the day I worked at a Remington store - the retail cutlery and shaving outlet - if any of you remember them - in the Burlington center mall
And once upon entering the scouting ranks also got an exposure to bladed items and tools
I cannot imagine having been raised and lived another way
As with the gunshop a higher than I want to justify percentage of my paycheck came home in store stocked items...
Bit by the bug early and still infected.

And I would like to find the knife I recall seeing in one of the gun magazines back in the '80s. Fixed blade with a duo finger rings you can put on or off the knife handle so you can spin it for a thrust or a "ice pick" without being coordinated [:D].0 -

As mentioned before I love all knives.
I'm lucky enough to have a few custom knives. TAT, Thurot, JP Miller, scrimshawed ivory, Mother of Pearl, stag, Big Horn Sheep, Oosik, Giraffe bone, polished, damascus, etc......Ivory and Oosik are my favorite scale/handle materials.
My wife gave me a BEAUTIFUL "TAT"(Terry A Treutel) Fixed Blade drop point sheath knife with Big Horn Sheep handles for my 30th birthday. I've carried/worn it religiously since 1989! It's never failed me and holds an edge like none other. I can't even begin to guess how many animals it's gutted and skinned. I think she paid $350.00+- way back then! Beautiful, comfortable to hold, and very functionable! I took it to a local guy to have it sharpened last year and the guy apologized for having to charge me an extra $2.00 because it took so long to sharpen. He said it's about the hardest blade he's ever sharpened in his 30+ years of sharpening!
I recently picked up my first Randall. Stag handle and made in the early 70's. I might have to take it hunting this year.
I'm obsessed with Switchblades of all kinds, and always have been!
Hubertus exotic scaled lever locks are my favorites. I also like "trick knives", switchblades with a pen blade or scale releases.
Last year I bought a bunch of Czech made Mikov hunting style knives while in Prague. One particular Lever lock stag handled automatic drop point is very well made, that I just could not live without!
As far as multi tools, I of course like the old original Leatherman's tool, but my Gerber multi tool is always in my pack while in the field. The next one I buy will be the Leatherman Wave.
I always carry a pocket knife, except when flying. Currently I carry a small 2 1/2" damascus file worked blade, unmarked, fancy little lockback given to me for Fathers Day last year by my Son and Daughter in Law the day after they got married.
I have a number of 14 Karat gold and sterling silver "dress knives that are beautiful.
One Fossilized Mammoth Ivory, damascus blade William Henry Knife, my wife gave me for my 50th birthday is an absolute beautiful piece of functional artwork.
My Grandfathers, Fathers, and Uncles hunting and pocket knives all hold very special emotional spots in my heart too.0 -

I have a couple of their folding knifes. If I was still in I would have one of the ones like you show. Just now being out in public the folder is easier to hide. But they are not quick opening.0 -
