Persimmons!!

That time of year again. Due to the drought this year all I got from my orchard was a few small apples but the wild persimmon trees are full! I picked several pounds of em today and waiting for them to finish ripening. Some muffins are in my future.[:p]

    I have several wild persimmon trees . I just never liked the taste no matter how I tried them.

    What kind of persimmons do you have, are they astringent or non-astringent? And have you ever tried eating at like this. I think it's delicious

    Place the fruit upside-down in a bowl and cut through the skin in quarters; spoon in a dollop of bourbon-flavored whipped cream and sprinkle with chopped toasted walnuts.

    I still laugh at baiting my kids and grand kids with good tasting simmons, then slip them a green one.[:0]


    They remember that one also. It gives them a heads up about accepting food from anyone.

    I honestly have no idea,,many were growing here when we bought the place 20 years ago and I take care of them and let them grow because I like watching the deer fight over them when they start falling off of the tree

    edit,,I went and looked up the difference,,I have Non-astringent

    +1, funny I was going to say almost same thing. Have a second home in Kents Store, Va. and a large persimmon tree about 40' from my back door. Many times I started to cut it down because it detracts from the looks of a monster oak tree to it's right.

    Finally, I made up my mind to leave it for the deer. I have a sun room and a security light in back to watch the deer fight over the persimmons. Many times I will have a cup of coffee and watch them gobble up the persimmons later at night. They don't seem to be bothered by the security light.

    I love the taste of the persimmons after they hit the ground and frost hits them. Before that they are very bitter. Once the frost hits them they start to get soft and tasty. They are a real mess so I pick them up and pile them next to trunk of tree so they don't get stuck in tractor cleats(otherwise a big mess in your shed).

    The deer seem to appreciate that I pile them up and fight like hell over them while stamping their feet. When they clean up the pile they stand on their hind legs and grab them from the lower branches that I left for them.

    Many times I have shined a light up in tree and there sits this big old possum with this silly grin on his face. What he doesn't eat, he knocks on the ground for the deer.

    one of the few things I cannot remember my mom making anything from, she made almost every kind of jelly/jam and canned all kinds of fruit and vegetables, but I never remember anything made from persimmons and we had 3 trees in the back lot growing up. +1 on every new kid who moved to neighborhood, got to taste a green persimmon, I still laugh thinking about them trying to spit the taste out.......[;)]

    We called em "Indian Apples" growing up and while I liked the flavor of a good ripe one, all of the seeds IMO where not worth all the trouble.

    My mom made Persimmon pudding for me. Wish I had some now. We had a huge tree in our yard always loaded. I think I was the only one that liked them in my family.
    My brother had a large tree on his property. I could get all I wanted then. But several years ago it split but still bore fruit. Then the damn power company came along and cut it down without telling him.
    At one time Persimmon was a valuable wood. Expensive golf club heads were made from it. Don't know about now.

    Montana, I never paid attention to the seeds. Is that supposed to mean something?

    Remington, these are what I have. Very bitter until fully ripe. Like others have mentioned I have had fun giving green ones to folks.

    Barz, you don't need a frost, but it helps. They will ripen without a freeze.

    Crack open the seed. The meat of the seed will be in the shape of a knife,fork,or spoon. This is known to predict the winter weather coming.
    A knife=dry,but very cold winter

    The fork=Mild winter,light snow

    The spoon(shovel)=Heavy,wet snow,lots of it too
