Phone system hacked

Never heard of this one before.
My wife work phone system got hacked.
It's a land line with ATT feeds about 15 different extensions.

HR noticed an increased in overseas calls witha bill for over $500.00 excess.

Several company's in the area are getting hit with $ 2,000 to $10,000 bills

She has to enter a password to unlock the phones when making calls.

    last few years of work the janitor crew went from mexicans, russians, puerto ricans, brazilians, and as of my retirement were back to locals, all the foreiners claimed to not speak english, russians were the friendliest bunch, fellow who did our store was a high school teacher who lost job when russia collapesed, he and his brother worked 7 days week,365 days year, sent money home, he told us his brother was in army in afgan and lost few toes to frostbite, as his company had no boots, he was nice guy just didn't talk much, they planned to stay for 6 years and figured by that time they would have sent enough money home to their dad to buy a farm, and were then going home to work it.

    We had to put a lock on the phones only a few people can make calls to any where. Seems they were connecting somehow outside and making long distance call.

    Most commercial phone systems are actually computers that link to a nationwide network. They can be hacked, like any other computer. The bad guys can get in, if you don't have security.

    Seems the ATT phone system, is run off a internet VOIP line.
    Seems someone hacked the VOIP carrier, Vonage Business.

    Overseas calls are not covered in the service, that's where the charges were coming from.

    So a newer relay box was installed with encryption, and all passwords changed.
