Stihl 038-AV Chainsaw

I have one that's over 20 years old, my Dad bought it new. The saw has seen little use and is in real good shape except that it hasn't been started in over ten years.I pulled the rope this afternoon and the motor isn't frozen. I was thinking I would pull the plug and pour a little Marvel Mystery Oil in and let it set for a few minutes. Fresh gas and a clean plug and see if she will go. Sound good to you small engine guys?? These are supposed to be pretty good saws.

    You can try. My experience says it will need a carb kit, and MAY need crankshaft seals. One will have to get it running to see if it needs seals. I would even forgo the marvel oil, and squirt some saw gas in and let 'er rip.

    Replace gas filter and hose from tank to carb.

    Mine is over 30 years old. I had to get a gas line for it recently.

    The older Stihl are in demand, as they were made in Germany, not like the new ones that are made in China. It is worth a lot.

    That is very true. I had a guy recently offer me $500 for my 009L. I turned it down. That is the handiest saw I have ever owned.

    pull the plug and air filter. i would then pour a small amount of fuel mixture (mix a small amount with extra oil) into the carb throat. choke off, throttle wide open, and pull several times. this should lube the entire engine. replace plug and put a little fuel in the tank and see if it will start. replacing the fuel filter and lines a good idea, will probably need a carb rebuild but i would replace with a new one. new carbs are reasonably priced and save a LOT trouble.

    Whatever you do, use non-alcohol gas.
    I use the pre mixed quarts from Stihl or Husqvarna.

    Go through it piece by piece and fix/replace what is needed and it will be nice. Here is an 024 I split the case put seals, bearings, rings, rubber, carb kit, painted and everything else needed as it is ready to put together and should be bout as good as new. Beside of it is a Husqvarna 346xp I almost have back together. I keep 4-5 torn down it seems all time waiting for parts, etc. The Stihl dealers repairmen want touch the jobs I do.

    I have a little Stihl 09 that I use for particular cuts when building log houses. So I was building a log house in 2015 and I got the little Stihl out. Hadn't been run in 12 years.

    When I had put it up 12 years earlier I poured out all the gas. Still, I figured the saw would need new plugs and a tune up etc.
    So I filled it up with new gas and oil, on the second pull cranked right up! Ran like a champ.

    Used the little saw for 3 months building the log cabin and it never skipped a beat. Bought this saw 32 years ago I guess made by Krauts.

    This is my 031AV that I bought in 1977. It's a little harder to start now, I think it is something to do with the compression release. It still runs like new.
