I defended you just the other day.

Someone was saying that you ate Sheeit sandwiches.

I corrected them, telling them that "You did not eat Bread."[:D]

Glad I could be there for you. [:)]

    I like it too.

This is how I make it:

    Ingredients

    1 lb ground beef
2 cups milk 2% or higher
    4 tbsp salted butter
    4 tbsp all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
    White bread toasted

    Instructions

In a medium sauce pan over medium high heat, brown the ground beef. Season with a little salt and pepper. Drain excess grease and set aside. Melt butter in the same sauce pan. Add flour and stir until butter/flour mixture is bubbly.
Add milk, salt, and pepper. Stir constantly until thick and bubbly. Add meat and stir. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed (I usually like a bit more pepper or red pepper). If necessary, add a little more milk until it reaches your desired consistency.
    Serve over toast.
Note: this is the exact same recipe I use for sausage gravy. Instead of ground beef, I substitute with hot, ground breakfast sausage.

Never had it with ground beef, but I don't know if I'd want to. I love it with chipped beeff... I think it's what gives it that awesome flavor

That stuff is one of my worst memories of being in the Navy. [V][V][V]

AKA, chipped beef on toast. more like dog puke on an actual shingle.

Ah, I remember it well...typical Navy breakfast chow...poop on a Shingle and/or foreskins on toast.

Love SOS and scrambled eggs. Our chow hall did an excellent job of it. I have, supposedly, the original recipe cut from the newspaper years ago. I think it had a dash of Worstershire Sauce in it.
Thank you Sam06 for your recipe.

RVN 1966-1967. My favorite breakfast. Home fried potatoes with an egg on top covered in SOS and add Tabaco. MMMMMM good. And its still my favorite breakfast

    The Army uses Ground Beef.

I have eaten it in chow halls all over the world.

Chipped beef is a different recipe/name.

For real chit on a shingle use ground beef.

That recipe works good for sausage. I Use Jimmy Dean Sausage because I like his sausage.

When I was a kid my mother would drop my sister and I off at our grandparents (father's parents) on Saturday evenings and on Sunday morning, Grandma would make creamed chipped beef on toast. I can still remember the jar of Armour sliced dried beef. Grandpa was in the Navy during WWI and it was his favorite breakfast, and I thought the stuff was great. It wasn't until years later that I discovered creamed chipped beef was held in low regard.

    I think you're mistaken...

The first published recipe for S.O.S is the Army version, which calls for chipped beef, a dried meat product perfectly designed for the battlefield. Indeed, the version of S.O.S. in the Manual for Army Cooks, 1910 also uses evaporated milk, which would have been easier to transport, shelf stable, and (at the time) safer to consume than fresh milk. [^][^][^]

So you see, the modern day poop on a shingle the Army serves now is chipped beef on toast with ground beef substituted for chipped beef. But the acronym would be too long (SOSWGBSFCB) to really say, and would just be strange[:D]

For real "poop on a shingle" you have to use chipped beef[^]

    I concur.

I've always had it with chipped Beef. (Even in the Army, from 79'-84')

Making it with ground beef sounds delicious though.

Had it both ways in the Marines. But when I was in and on mess duty we used ground beef.

Made in big batches in a huge steam kettle.

MMMMM MMMMMM, Just plain good stick to your ribs good eats!

My mom taught me how to make what she called "Poor man's gravy" and when I was in the service years later they called the very same stuff SOS!

I enjoy it at home today along with another favorite "Biscuits and gravy" which uses pork sausage instead of hamburger. The same rue (white sauce) used for all.

The dried chipped beef used in this mix, I have always called it chipped beef on toast. I really enjoy all this type of food![:p]

I just finished my breakfast consisting of SOS, not to be confused with SOSWGBSFCB (poop on a shingle with ground beef substituted for chipped beef), eggs over medium, country style hash browns with salsa and coffee.[:D] It was delicious...[^]

Maybe next week I will make SOSWGBSFCB (poop on a shingle with ground beef substituted for chipped beef)... It will be good also, but not as good as SOS... [:D]

Chipped beef, white gravy on white toast was our annual Christmas Morning Breakfast when I was a kid.
My Dad said S.O.S. was his favorite meal in the Army!

The Navy in the 1950s had two breakfast Shingle versions.

One, we referred as poop on a shingle was made with ground meat and looked like a sloppy joe on toast.

The other we referred to as foreskins on toast made with chipped beef in a white gravy on toast.

Can't say as I ever lost weight on either of them.

Back then, you went through the Navy chow line and was served what was on the line...I found out latter that not all service chow lines are the same.

We had an RON at McCord AF Base and went through their chow line and had a welcome surprise.

First, the Steward asked me what I wanted. I said, Are you kidding me? No sir, what would like for breakfast? We have any thing you want. I ordered Bacon and Eggs, Toast, OJ, Coffee ? The capper was, How do you want your eggs? They came perfect Over Easy.

I thought that I might have been better joining the air force ?[:D]
