M855A1 ammo/legal to sale or possess?

I want to know if this new 5.56 rd is legal to buy and possess? I see it for sale on the auction side but I understand ATF says its not legal for the general public to possess. Any info on this?

    Yes it's legal. Readily bought in stores. I have bought bunches of it in stores around here.

    I have a lot on hand, (As I am sure,) quite a few Members here, do as well.

    Legal last I heard. There were some questions as to its legality a couple years ago, hence the run on 855. (They were trying to ban it.) Was never Outlawed, from what I heard/read.


    If so, I do not have any, nor do I know what you are talking about.

    According to US Code: The term ?armor piercing ammunition? means?
    (i)a projectile or projectile core which may be used in a handgun and which is constructed entirely (excluding the presence of traces of other substances) from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass, bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium; or a full jacketed projectile larger than .22 caliber designed and intended for use in a handgun and whose jacket has a weight of more than 25 percent of the total weight of the projectile.


    Because M855 contains more than a trace of lead, it is not considered to be AP.

    The 855A1 is a full steel core with copper jacket bullet. This the definition that Hunter 86004
    describes. With all the AR pistols out there it would seem to fall under the ATF rules. Not like the old M855 with the small steel tip.

    This web site shows the A1 as having a steel penetrator with a copper slug behind it. So, the copper keeps it from being AP.

    If you buy any, keep in mind the round chews up the feed ramps unless you use a "certain" mag developed for the round. Or just use the latest pmag, don't know why the mil needed a new mag when the pmags work.

    Thanks for the detailed info, so it appears, at least for the time being, it is legal.
