I finally get Bob Barker - spay & neuter your pets
I used all the rationalizations to not neuter my shepard mix. Pretty sure he made litter of pups at least once when we lived in town. Don't know about after I moved to the country and it was just me & him, but I don't think so. He lived to be almost 16 before I had to let him go.
My wife used to work at shelters and pounds and she's well networked in the pet care field. She insisted on getting the rot-n-lab neutered when we moved in together.
She gets calls and texts almost daily, "Can you help find a home for this pet?" One of the recent ones was a nine y/o beagle they had raised since it was a puppy. Not up on shots, not spayed, I think the reason was a baby on the way or moving and can't take her.
I had to put my foot down on taking in these critters, but we still ended up keeping a tiny dog that we were supposed to just be "fostering"

I love big dogs. Relatives and friends have died and I miss them and that's it, but a random person's dog dying and I tear up. BUT, I absolutely can't stand little dogs. They just annoy the hell out of me. From the whiny yip they make, to the constant pawing at your pants for attention. Instead of a little dog, I see a fuzzy rat that I would like to score a field goal with. Totally useless for any purpose except as a lap critter, which I don't like either. My dog lays down by my feet and doesn't bark (has been taught to click her teeth instead). 0 -

One of our pets got loose when we first moved here. It disappeared and I couldn't find it, so I visited the Humane Society in town to see if any dog catcher came in with it. The animals you see when you visit are only a portion of the animals housed there. There are rooms full of animals in cages that are brought in and held for health reasons, etc. all the time. sad pups and cats in cages,many will never see a home again. I'm no vegan or bleeding heart, but I spay or neuter my animals now. 0 -
My last two dogs have been rescues. The first was a male Basset Hound.
I was told he was two years old, I believe (towards the end) he was older. His face was turning white after 3 years. Good Dog, but could never be house trained, so relegated to an outside dog. Hated that, but I did the best I could for him. Had to put him down, due to rear legs going out on him. Slept on the floor with him for 5 nights. It became obvious he was not going to get better. Heart wrenching.
My current dog, a Pit Bull (Buddy) adopted at what I was told was 9mo. old. (Have had him 1 yr. 3 mo.) BY FAR, the BEST dog I have ever owned. I thank God on a regular basis for bringing us together.
Adopt a dog. Don't buy a dog. Try and get a dog, that is in a bad situation, out of the situation. They know. You will be rewarded.

we have 5 dogs and apx 20 cats ( dont ask 2 dropped off pregnant females a year ago ) all have been spayed or neutered
we have a chunk of $$ in just fixing them [:D]
not counting past ones we have had fixed .
our last pound rescue they told us she was "fixed " even the paper worked stated it . with in a week I knew better [:(] but the shelter was closed and no way to recover the cost ,they ran out of money , why we took Macie to start with to save her before the closed up shop
any way a trip to our vet and she was taken care of
as a kid I remember "neighbors dumping puppys and kittens on some back road to get rid of them , or worse [:(!][:(!]
as long as I have a pet it will get taken care of0 -
Our last 3 have been spayed. Sometimes I wish we hadn't had them fixed. It would have been nice to have "continued the line" as they have been the best dogs, first went to old age, the second to lyme (didn't know they developed a vaccine) this one is 6 years old. It's going to be real painful when it is her time. Lab golden mixes. 0
