my rifle story
did not want to take awy from docs great story and rifle
I have a similar story about my favorite rifle
my itch from from when I was young maybe 10 or 11 years old I had no real knowledge of guns or really anyone that had any thing other than a old 22 or a shotgun if lucky both
I had a old Remington ammo booklet I would look thru like old toy catalog
in the back listed the calibers and power of each at the top of the list was a 458 magnum . I just knew I had to have one . I had never been to a gun shop or even seen a center fire rile at that time [:I]
but always in back of mind I just knew I had to have one [^]
at 18 I started going to gun shows and many went by and many guns were swapped and traded
then one day I was about 20 years old or so at a gun show I walked by a table a rifle caught my eye OMG it was a ruger 77 in a 458 win mag
I looked at it pondered how I could buy it knowing I had little to no money . just hung my head low put the gun back on the table and walked on
several rows over what did I see a single box of 458 ammo again the only box I had even seen in real ....
Karma thats it [:D][:D]has to be so I ran back to the other table like a little kid wanting a puppy talked to the seller I had a ruger mini 14 and a few other guns at home ( 50 miles away ) but the guy guy agreed to do a trade put the gun under his table I ran back over bought the box of ammo
drove home like a bat out of hell and back took home my pride and joy
why I have no real idea just a dream of a young kid for a big rifle [:D]
it has brought countless smiles to people getting to shoot my ( elephant rifle over the years )
I can also relate to the stolen part sadly .
I am 99% sure my youngest son a buddy of his" borrowed it one day" it went missing not really sure how long before I noticed it gone
of course my kid said nothing I posted a note on the fridge as I had a good idea what happened "I just want my rifle back it means more to me that who ever took it will ever know no questions ask"
another week or so went by and it showed up in my reloading room but with a few battle scars in the wood but I had it back
many years passed and got the nerve to let part of it go, the stock always bothered me with its dings and scuffs from its side trip [:(!] I ask Keith ( old magic on the forum ) to refinish and repair it for me after a few e-mails
he did a amazing job looked better than it did when I got it it has the Carlo walnut wood and it turned out great
my youngest son and his buddy never have said a word , what they did hurt deeper than the gun missing if they ask I would have let them take it out and shoot it

Wow....thanks for sharing that story. I think it hit all, or at least most, of my emotions.
Reminds me a lot of my Dad and him finally getting his long-coveted .375 H&H magnum. Man is that thing a hoot to shoot!

took me 20 years to find the rifle that dealers and gun show people said they didn't make but was in the 1980's gun catalogs....a Navy Arms Martini Target in 444 marlin octagon barrel...finally found one NIB... have not shot it after 15 years...thing weighs in at eleven pounds....have to take along a bench rest....reload 265 grain small flat point at SAMMI max... 0 -
Great Story, D-R.
I can't imagine the pain of knowing...."If they only asked".......
Guns can bring the worst out in people and the best people seem to always be around guns. I've met the nicest and most caring people around guns and hunting.0 -
at the time the kid my youngest son was hanging with was one one of people could go ether way he was wiling to help do anything around her to help a real nice kid but also had a flip side mischief would be a good PC term , they met in grade school
he may influenced my son to take for a test my son was not totally innocent and for all I know may have decided to do it on his own I will never know maybe on my death bed he will confess to clear his conscious
I know he knew better but I guess like taking your parents car it was just to tempting at the time I had no safe all the guns were easy access and tempting
it still hurts me to know they did it .
the other kid I always called my adopted son and also baby Hughy he is a big old boy same with his dad and grandpa ( a wwII vet and a great old fellow ) had hands like a base ball glove [:D]
