The first of a kind auction request.
I sold a commercial 30 carbine receiver this afternoon. My customer has requested that after I receive my payment that I cut the receiver in half at a certain point before shipping.
He is planning to use part of the receiver on a project he is working on. Fair enough. Since it is a commercial receiver I won't feel too bad about honoring his request. When his payment arrives and clears I'll do as he has requested. Along with pictures as a record for the A&D book showing it was demilled before shipment.
This was a first for me, so I've got to know what kind of requests have some of you had from the auction side?

I would really question why he wants YOU to do it. I hope he's not setting you up for something, like trying to get out of buying it from you by saying you cut it in the wrong place... And then you'd have to take it back and give him a refund.
Sounds kind of fishy ( anti-second) to me. I mean what better way for a anti-Second Amender to get somebody to cut up a good firearm0 -
Unless you are real skilled and knowledgeable and know about batfe receiver torch cut and dewat - demill rules and certification you should still require an ffl before transfer...
Just in case - socks and suspenders insurance.

I thought of that but he did ask the question through the GunBroker system, they do keep copies of all the messages sent through their ask a question system. I found that out a few years back when I had a PITA customer. He is not new to GunBroker. He has close to 100 transactions under his belt, all positive. He is sending a release along with his payment.0 -

I stopped trying to read minds a long time ago. To many crazy folks out there with strange idea's.
Perhaps he wants to rebuild the receiver adding length to accommodate a
longer cartridge and figured if the seller would de-mill the receiver he could save it from registration ?0 -
I do know a guy who buys pistols confiscated by police departments (typically cheap and broke) and he works with the batfe to demill the frames - with a paper trail tracking the legal destruction...
He sells the remnants and parts to a group of women who make jewelry out of the gun pieces - the idea being that if you buy the jewelry you get a certificate stating you helped take a gun off the streets and out of criminal circulation...
Certain nicer guns and some non frame parts go to numrich or an ffl holding dealer.
Apparently some lib prog dem alt left snowflake chicks in comfortable shoes with white privilege guilt and a liberal arts degree from one of the seven sisters elite schools will pay a premium price to display one of these pieces of jewelry...
I also know a guy who brought torch cut receivers from the government (garands and carbines and M1A's and such) and makes desk art and trailer hitch covers and such...
So it's possible that it's legit but still highly suspect.

Per the ATF, simply sawing a receiver in half does NOT make it a non-firearm. Shred it, melt it or torch cut it in 3 specific places.0 -
Yes you cannot simply separate a frame or receiver into pieces that might easily be put back together - but must actually remove materiel and often requires a diagonal torch burn through...
Or so I recall.

If he?s still willing to receive the gun thru a FFL transfer one Pc or two it won?t matter 0 -
Just send him the gun along with a small saw. Tell him you have tendonitis and can't use a saw anymore. [:)] 0 -
Just like to add my 2 cents
Cut the receiver like he wants, not demilled, but send it to his FFL as a repairable gun. Maybe his project is to reweld a gun to operate again. But it still doesn't pass the smell test. I would refuse his request and offer a refund0 -

Well to err on the side of caution. I've decided not to cut the receiver. the buyer have to make arrangements to have this sent to one of his local FFL.
I called my local field agent and he recommended the same, shipping only to an FFL in the buyers state, cut or not. He also requested the buyers info to see if this might be a prohibited person. Even they thought this was strange. I also have a confirmation email on our conversation.
Whenever something out of the ordinary pops up I always check with the ATF and request their response in an email before proceeding. It's always better to have something from the ATF in writing. Memories of phone conversations sometimes fade or are outright denied of having happened.0 -
I heard back from the buyer. He's going to arrange for it to be sent to an FFL in his state. I've also heard back from the ATF. The ATF has given me some information that I won't disclose here. This may get interesting. 0 -

The best thing you did was to ask the ATF. Most of the agents I deal with are very helpful. I cut lots of firearms up an follow the letter as to how they want them done. saw cuts are a big No. Remember CYA. 0 -

A lot of very good solutions. And this makes a lot of sense, or not.
I do not care what you do but your FFL will receive for you.
I have seen good M14 cut receiver rewelds at shows that look very functional, maybe. Then quiz owner and before long you know who it is.
Another show one table one item, the guy asked us as we walked by quietly that he wants to sell full auto 16 trigger group. My Brother asked if he owns any AR rifles, and if he has more TG's at home? The "GUY" says sure you want more? My Brother says how come you want to go to prison so bad? [:o)][xx(]
Nutjobs, ATF ROPERS, and real legal law abiding purposes, but again don't even think that it is that easy.
As said let him cut, take the chance, trying to save 25.00 bucks well it is not worth a trip to club Fed.0 -
