only in my dreams as a kid the movies and stories wow what kid would not want to go . then as age and reality set in the $$ required hit like a ton of bricks .
however I sure would like to , but now lack of money and being so far out of shape [B)] I will have to stick to watching the old reruns on TV [:D]

For the price of ONE "safari", I can hunt places I can drive to for the rest of my pitiful life.0 -
Yes. It can get pricey, but there are ways to make it more affordable. Of course airfare, trophy transportation and taxidermy fees add up, but in 2-3 weeks time you can collect a number of animals. Big Game hunting on private land in North America can get awful expensive too.
I went to South Africa and Namibia in 2012 with my son.
I bought both safaris at an SCI Fundraiser for less than $2000.00 total. (Plus air, taxidermy, etc) Both were for up to 2 hunters and two observers! In South Africa trophy fees for a Blesbok, Impala, Warthog, and Wildebeast were included. I added a Lioness hunt in the Kalahari Desert. It was nothing short of spectacular!
In Namibia, up to an amount in trophy fees were included. I took a magnificent Kudu and enormous Eland. I hunted hard there for a Zebra for my wife, but came up short!
My Son never had an interest in hunting but he had just graduated college and we offered him a trip to anywhere in the world for his graduation present. He asked who was going with me on my Safari and I told him no one could go! Business commitments, illness, money, etc.....
He asked if he could come along! It was simply amazing! By the end of the trip, he was wishing he took the rifle when offered for a couple of the trophies! He did spend a day shooting Guinea Fowl and other birds, and loved it. It was so special sitting at the nightly fire with the other guests, hunters, Professional hunters and my son was entertaining them all with a guitar.
I would recommend a Safari to anyone that's able. It is spectacular!

Steyr Mannlicher Model 72 30-06 Leupold 1-4X scope. Barnes 180 grain Vortex ammo. The ammo was simply impressive. Performed as expected or even better. I'd like some more glass. Maybe 3-9X next time if there is a next time.....Shotgun, a Benelli Nova 12 Gauge. Ugly as sin, but everyone loved that ugly Benelli!!

Yes, I went to Zimbabwe in 1985. I shot a big Kudu, and Wildebeeste, 2 ram Impalas (and 3 does for meat), a klipspringer, several baboons and birds such as Guinea fowl, Francolin, Sandgrouse, doves and redbilled and yellowbilled hornbills.
For a 7 day hunt, I was pleased with the harvest.
The amount of game about ruined me for deer hunting here in Arkansas.
The cost was much less then. I couldn't do it now at today's prices.0 -

This has been one of the most exciting subjects to hit GBGD in a long time! I have had dreams most of my life to experience such a hunt.[8D]

The 30-06 is plenty of gun for most of the Plains Game and Cats. The Cats have very thin skin. I would have preferred a 338 Win Mag or even a 375 H&H for the Eland. It took me 3 shots for him!0 -

I won the Benelli Nova 12ga. at a Pheasants Forever fundraiser. It is black with plastic stocks. Although it shoots fine and is a great gun, it's butt ugly! Plain and simple, ugly!
I like rich deep Blueing and nice wood stocks, some fine checkering and maybe some nice figure in the wood. Like my Mannlicher in the pictures!
Life is far to short to hunt with an ugly gun or an ugly knife.0 -
