Armageddon in NC Begin- Update Tuesday
I had to change the oil in my wife's Ford Edge but I didn't have the correct oil on hand. So I load up to go to Walmart. I kind of live away from stuff so a trip to Walmart takes me about 30 min or so.
I figure I will bring a gas can to fill with Non-Ethanol gas too as there is a station that sells right by there.
OH MY GOD!
Walmart is covered up with people grabbing bottled water, can goods, batery's, flashlights, Bread...........
So all the lines are full and all I have are some windshield wipers and 6 qts of 5-20 Motorcraft oil I go to the self checkout.
The dude that is supposed to help/make sure you pay comes up to me and says "we have water on sale and other items to prep for the storm". I look at him and said "I am always preped and I get my water from a well, have a generator and 800gal of Propane to run it, the only thing I really need is some whisky to sip".
He thought that was funny.
Then I asked him if Walmart donated money to the Weather Channel?
He didn't get it and I left.
Gas station was packed but the Non-E pump was clear so I filled my can waited until the Diesel lane was clear and filled my Truck too.
Oil and filter are changed, new wipers installed and tire pressure checked........I have the rest of the day off now[;)]
I can sit back and watch the panic on TV.

After one of the 3 2004 storms in central Florida a neighbor was returning from Houston and bought 2 small generators for $400.00+ tax each in case his neighbors needed one.
He lent me one because mine died (of course). He also lent one to the owner of a gun store. He asked if I wanted to keep it and reimburse him and I felt that was the right thing to do and did so.
The gun shop owner said no he would use it and give it back when he was done. No joke.
But what was funny is FEMA came by and asked if I bought a generator and I said yes and they reimbursed me for it.
So, the gun shop owner got a few free days and gave it back and I got to keep mine free of charge.
Every once in a while doing what is right pays off and doing what is wrong gets you.
I recently bought a new inverter generator and gave the other to my daughter and SNL.
I got another bonus for looking good and I got it free. [:D]0 -

During winter snowstorms you are supposed to buy all the milk and bread. For hurricanes, all the water and flashlight batteries.
Longest we have been off the grid from a storm was 9 days. We had kids/ grandkids come to visit, eat with us, neighbors come over for dinner and gin rummy.
We don't need bottled water or flashlight batteries, but I will make sure I can find the pump for the Coleman table lamps. Unlike the lanterns, the table lamps use a separate hand pump.0 -

OK Just got back from town Tue 9/11 1400hrs
Went to Raleigh to get a few items and I took the M1028 truck.
I filled it up with Diesel in town where its cheap and the station was OUT OF GAS.
They had Diesel so I filled 2 5gal military cans with Diesel and I filled my truck.
Driving around ALL the Gas stations had long lines and plenty were out of fuel.
There is one station that has a Non Ethanol pump and cars were lined up around the building to get some of that gas because That was ALL THEY HAD it sells for almost $4 a gal.
Went to Food Lion to get some Mushrooms& Green peppers to make spaghetti tonight some grapes and apples for me to munch on.
Food lion was packed. They had a cop car in front parked(Not sure why)--No Bread, no water eggs and milk depleted.
There is a Home Depot right next to the Food Lion went in to get a string filter for my water line from the well...........Turned around and left it was packed............no water, generators fly off the shelf people in full panic mode. I saw 2 minor fender benders.
This place is coming apart and its only Tuesday.0 -
I made a run into town for a few small items that while not necessary were things I wanted . The crowds were for the most part well behaved . How long this will last is anyone?s guess. 0 -

I was thinking the same thing.
It doesn't take a genius to figure out that if you live in certian areas you should be prepared. If you live on the East Coast you are going to have:
1. Tornado's
2. Hurricanes
3. Huge Snow/Ice storms (I Know we don't know how to drive on Ice like everyone else does)
That means you are going to lose power for at least a few hours to a week.
Have some set aside to survive on.
There is not a battery, flashlight or bottle of water in the CVS that is not far from. My wife had to stop there are pick up a prescription. She said it was wiped out.
-Who doesn't keep batteries and a flashlight-
-Who doesn't keep a case or two of bottled water and if not how hard is it to fill a tub or buckets also why would you not have water unless you are have a well like me that requires power to lift the water out of the ground???

The unsettling part of these events is watching the supposedly "settled/comfortable" segments of our society carry on this way over simple items-batteries, water, a jug of milk, etc.-and just how fast things descend into chaos over such stupidity. If most could see what goes on in densely populated urban areas at the slightest hint of an event, it would scare the crap out of you. With the availability of social media and other means of instant communication, our urban areas, at the slightest hint of an incident, literally resemble images of Mogadishu. From personal observations I can assure you that, our cities especially, are only one major weather or other event from descending into anarchy. 0 -

Threw my paper route in this one. Folding and slapping newspapers in the kitchen a little after 3 AM the morning of 27 June 1957 woke up my Mother. She wanted to know why I was not outside in the carport doing it. Told her it was too windy. Loaded the paper bags on my bike, put on my raincoat, and pushed it to my route. About the last house on the route that morning belonged to the Ritters. They were awake and invited me in out of the weather. Eileen, my friend and their daughter was dressed in her housecoat. I believe they told me that school had been cancelled, and everyone needed to seek shelter at their local schools...ours was James Bowie Jr. High. I rode the brakes of my bicycle on the way home as there was no need to peddle. The storm came through Beaumont, as I recall, with 90 mph wind gusting to 110 or better. It was a very bad Cat 3 storm that took about 500 lives and destroyed Cameron, Louisiana.
I would not want to be within 20 miles of the coast when Florence hits. Once again, good luck to all of you folks in its path.

That is the stores' fault for allowing such items to be returned when purchased just prior to a pending storm POSSIBLY requiring the useage of such an item.

I picked up a 7500 Watt Generac at the local HD after week long power outage for 60 cents on the dollar. It was used for a few hours by someone who bought it during the outage and returned it for full price when they got their power back.0 -
Just got back from the Food Lion, I decided I needed more PBR.
They were restocking WATER! They even had some bread. I picked up 2 cases of PBR, Some Hamburger meat they were doing a sale on and some Hamburger buns.
So it looks like Beer and burgers for tonight. My wife is basically a vegetarian so she gets a Portabelo Mushroom burger.
Checked out some of the isles, there was not one Can of:
1. Vienia Sausage
2. Tuna
3. Chef Boyardes spaggatti O's or any of the stuff
4. Spam
5. Potted meat
What was left:
Canned Calf Brains
Canned Sausage? Never had it
Anchovies(I like them)
Canned Corn Beef(Its not too bad)
Canned Corn beef hash
Sardines
The soup isle was demolished.
What was left was:
Split pea soup(I like it) and some minestrone soup.
Lots of cans of Manwich left. I almost got some its been a long time since I had a Sloppy Joe/Manwich.
Gas lines are down but then there are stations without gas or only high test.0 -

I have lots of cousins that live in LA. I grew up in Beaumont. I also had some distant cousins that lived in Slidell. I never met them, but did correspond with one regarding our genealogy and South Carolina roots.
