That's how I too was taught to eat it Japo style. I think I'll go look for a seedy one this week.

I hadn't thought of it in years, but we salted it when I was a kid. I don't do it anymore.

That's the way I was taught to eat melon in Wisconsin. My wife, originally from Long Island, thinks I'm nuts for salting melon and won't even try it.

As one from a long line of watermelon growers, I highly recommend salting, always have but it's ones choice [;)]

Not since I got old enough to make up my own mind! Dad wouldn't eat a mellon without salt. And hooray for NO seeds!

Can't do salt due to medical concerns, but lime juice has the same effect for me, especially on Charentais Cantaloupe! And Fritos.

My son wrecked his drone he was flying around because of this. He was out on the front porch. I had just fixed a bowl of watermelon and sprinkled some salt on it. Not thinking I just stuck my fork in a bit and held it out to his mouth.....he shuddered and dove for the railing to spit it out. His drone flew into a pile of dead branches and he started ranting....."WHAT DID YOU PUT IN MY MOUTH???"

So, that is how I learned not everyone does this. I figured everyone loved salt on their watermelon.

I salt very few things, but watermelon and canteloupe are two exceptions to my no salt policy.

Only on a sub-par melon. A good sweet melon doesn't need it and is better without salt.

That's how you eat it when the watermelon sucks. Good watermelon should be unadulterated.

The scientific explanation in the OP is correct. But the emphasis must be on lightly salted. A little is good, but a lot is NOT better.

Yes, most of the time, not always if the melon is really sweet.

I also like Honey Dew or Cantaloupe slices wrapped in prosciutto (Italian Dried Ham)...very tasty.

I salt all melons, grapefruit, apples, and most everything else, up to and including beer.

I crave salt, especially after sweating all day at work. Low blood pressure will do that to a fella.
