Pipe Wrench ?

I have a 6 inch Walworth pipe wrench with a wood handle in great shape. The wood has no cracks or chips.

The wrench has Stillson who patenned this type of wrench stamped on it. From what i can find out it was made between 1869 to 1919.

I can find a closer date to when it was made if i look up the patent number. I did not think about writing the patent number down yesterday.

I took the pipe wrench apart and ran it through my grinder on a wire wheel. The steel came out good.

I was wondering if i should paint the wood back red like it was or just leave the wood like it is.

Also would you paint the wrench?

If i do not paint the wrench i will wax it so it does not rust.

Just looking for some ideas.

I have about 20 old pipe wrenches that i am going to clean up and display. Along with some really old wrenches.

    From what i just found out it was made from 1869 to 1882.

    I have sold loads of Old tools when the wife and I were selling antiques for 12 years. Your wrench is worth about $12. They do make nice displays or personal collections. I wouldn't paint the wood.
    A dip in something like sheallac or varnish maybee.

    I would leave the wood alone apart from cleaning if needed. Collectors are fussy about original condition. Kinda true with guns too.

    Sounds like sale value isn't an issue. You will be the one displaying it. How do you want to see it? That's the way it should look.

    I 100% paint my old tools (when I get to it) after cleaning / derusting them. It preserves them for a long time.

    My father always referred to any pipe wrench as a "stillson". He'd say "Go down to the basement and get that red handeled stillson", and stuff like that.

    no real value do what you want paint it if mine I have a few tossed in a box or drawer I think any stamped FORD or similar brand names as a example have some collector interest for displays / collectors

    There may be some out there labeled Winchester.

    I have several old wrenches & screwdrivers I got from my fathers tools when he died. There are three letters on each of them that I thought was some brand name. I finally realized they are my Great-Grandfathers initials.
