    We could have done it 30 years ago or even 10 except barry had NASA teaching math to muslims;

    Charles Bolden, a retired United States Marines Corps major-general and former astronaut, said in an interview with al-Jazeera that Nasa was not only a space exploration agency but also an "Earth improvement agency".

    Mr Bolden said: "When I became the Nasa administrator, he [Mr Obama] charged me with three things.

    "One, he wanted me to help reinspire children to want to get into science and math; he wanted me to expand our international relationships; and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering."

    First, there is no "dark" side of the moon.

    Second, the BACK of the moon is almost completely unexplored and unexamined, mostly because it is so technically difficult to do so.

    Third, We could have done this decades ago if there had been any drive to do so. Our space program collapsed when Congress killed the Apollo program because the TV audience had shrunk. Idiots.

    Brz, that may be the most brilliant post you've ever made.

    Convince the Chinese that moon dust is more powerful that rhino horns, bear bile, elk antlers... And maybe they'll quit slaughtering half the world's wildlife to get a hard-on.

    Since it's not possible to reach the dark side of the moon with radio signals it makes me wonder just how they got pictures sent back to Earth?

    You're correct, a definite attaboy but it can be wiped out in an instant.

    As I said, it is technically difficult. First, they had to launch and orbit a relay satellite around the moon. The relay talks and listens to the lander when it passes overhead, stores whatever the lander gives it, and then transmits it all to Earth when it comes around to this side. Then the relay has to receive and record instructions from ground controllers until it passes back around and transmits those to the lander.

    Ground can never talk to the lander directly, neither for the landing itself, or for any subsequent data downloads or command uploads. China launch the relay satellite months ago, and couldn't launch the lander until they were sure the relay bird was in orbit and functioning as designed.

    Well, the "dark side" (more accurately referred to as the "far side" since it really isn't dark) of the moon isn't as mysterious as some make it out to be. We have complete photomosaic maps of the far side. They are available for free download on the internet. It shows a heavily cratered surface. I would be much more interested in polar landings. We just MIGHT discover some ice. If we find ice, then long term research stations are possible.
