Gimme the Marriott, I'm on Per Diem

This used to be an East Coast Det Site for the Sixth Fleet patrol squadrons. It was a big site during WWII to cover the convoy routes between Europe and the US and Canada. Also the very important convoys going to Murmansk and Archangel. U-Boats played Hell with convoys beyond the reach of air cover.

Like other sites around the world, it may be reactivated due to the perceived Russian threat.

    Until the 80's the same was true of Dodge and Adak.

    Here's an Adak Photo. August,'83 or thereabout. Salmon grabbing like a bear. I'm standing in a stream. I was with VP-50

    This is a September or October photo of Adak, don't remember the year, maybe 81, but I was with VP-50, the A/C tail markings are a giveaway.

    Beartrap was a special project to gather acoustic data on new and overhauled surface, subsurface, and any other tasking as needed. We kept a two week bag packed for hot and cold climates in our lockers.
    We could get an order to launch to anywhere in the world and had four hours to be airborne

    We had two Beartrap birds in the Pacific and one or two in the Atlantic.
    The planes had special equipment and special calibrated sonobuoys.

    After my wings, the Beartrap designation is the one I was most proud of.
