    The Rattlesnake Inn.

It?s just South of Ft Hood Texas, and North of George Town. I think it?s in a town called Florence Texas.

Back in the late 70?s it was the wildest place I ever partook in. Myself and another young Army MP worked the door there as bouncers for a short time until it was put off limits for all service members by the DOD Disciplinary Review Board.

The stories I could tell from that place or endless.

I started working at a club called Good Times just North of Austin Texas off State highway 183 in the summer of 1978 after having to leave the Rattlesnake.

This club was one of the approved sites for the Dallas Cowboys to patronize during their Spring Training. I was kind of apprehensive about having to deal with them at first, but they were a bunch of great guys that never caused a problem. All the girls who worked at Texas Instruments just up the road would flood the place on the weekends in hopes of hooking up with a player there, and some did.

I got to know DD Lewis real well, as well as Randy White (the Manster), Danny White (He didn?t drink), Charlie Waters, & several others.

Lord-e-mercy, there was a gang of them. I?m not sophisticated enough to pick one. Limiting it to the USA, the worst ass kicking I ever took was at the Silver Saddle on Shore Drive in Norfolk. I can?t say the Silver Saddle was any badder than the Cozy Inn just down the street but a little more popular and a different crowd. In the early to mid 1960s you could go to East Main Street with wall to wall bars and there is a fair chance any one you pick would be the baddest you?ve ever been in. Same thing on Crawford Street in Portsmouth. The Norfolk police wouldn?t go to East Main Street after dark and the Shore Patrol went four in a group in vans.

The civic leaders finally got all that cleaned up to make room for the yachts and rich folks; that and we appear to have a better class of sailor these days.

I guess the most dangerous bar I was ever in was the Enlisted Men?s Club at Guantanamo Bay. They took up all the chairs at 4:00 pm and didn?t serve anything in a bottle.

I do remember one in Minnesota that was a combo biker bar and cowboy bar. Lots of fights. I was in once with a buddy, we had a couple beers and left.

Told my wife about it and she laughed and said it?s a nice place at about 8:00 in the morning. Seems she and some other nurses would go when they got off of working third shift. She said the only ones in there would be third shifters from the hospitals and the dairy that was across the street.

Worked as a bouncer in Jay's elbow room and the fantasy show room as a second job or when between jobs - started while I was in college

Both were on the same lots with no tell motels - hooker and heroin hostels

Believe it or not I was first exposed to bar work and gentlemen club work by one of the neighborhood soccer moms the summer before highschool - the husband ran a shoe repair / cobbler spot while she was house mom / den mother (and yes - okay madam) to the girls at the club - it was an odd educational experience to say the least

Bar in North Carolina in Jacksonville There were several but one that was a biker bar Was was told not to go there. Did anyway and had a great time. Almost any bar in Kin Ville Okinawa.

Several in San Diego. But the one that I saw the Most fights at was a Red Neck Club in Poway Calif Called The Pomerado Club. Ran into Cher there, but did not talk much as a fight broke out and she headed out via the kitchen.

    This Place. https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Pomerado-Club/120012858136399

Closest I came to buying the Big ticket was as a Bouncer at a all Mexican bar in Vista Calif. Best friend even got shot there. Should say was winged there. But the guy who shot him went to the Hospital.
We were not even allowed to have night clubs in there cause they would gang up on you and beat you with your own club.

Just remember as a Marine I seemed to find all the wrong clubs.

Anywhere in the 500 block of Hay Street, Fayetteville NC. They would search you for guns and knives- and give you one if you were short one. Home of the Special Forces annual 3 day drunk, reunion and wall kicking contest.

The Hill Bar in Craig, Alaska in the late '70's. Fishermen, Tlingot Indians, loggers, and an occasional group from the Coast Guard...
It got pretty sporty in there a time or two!!!

When I was a Gunboat rider our Chief Boatswain?s Mate, good ol Chief Godfrey told Seaman Seavey he would take him over to Portsmouth and show him how to pull a good liberty.

Next day Seavey told us Godfrey took him to a seedy looking place where the bouncer stopped them at the door and told them ?you gentlemen will have to check your guns at the door?. Godfrey said ?We ain?t got no guns?. The bouncer said ?You came in here without a gun!??

Seavey said if the place had a name he didn?t find out what it was. He said he had one hell of a good time.

Had to have been nearly 20 years ago, my late father in law "Vito" and I had just finished up a hard, hot, summer afternoons work across town, tearing apart wooden pallets at a big warehouse. I used the free wood for backup heating at my greenhouse.

Needless to say, we had both worked up quite a thirst and my relative by marriage Sicilian accomplice offered to buy me a drink at a new to us pub that was just down the street from the warehouse.

The place was called "Side Tracks" and I first gathered that it was named because the R\R ran right along side of it. Anyway, the beer was good and cold and the generosity of dad that day seemed endless as we downed several before changing over to a pitcher on tap.

We were so busy enjoying each others company that I at first didn't notice the strange goings on around the bar that warm afternoon. It finally hit me when I observed several guys that were hanging around the jukebox, ended up making their selections and began dancing with each other!!!![:0]

I decided right then and there to start slugging down my brew as quickly as gravity allowed and made subtle motions to my FIL to do the same before I was approached by a big guy talking with a lisp, asking for a dance!! [:0]

Well, left that place in a cloud of dust leaving a lot of good cold brew still on the table! I did not need to hear from several friends, quite some time later that "Side Tracks" was a G.A.Y. bar![xx(]

Trader Johns in downtown Pensacola, Fla. nasty, smelly place, don't think the floor had ever been swept. The only thing I could look at without starting a fight was all the military souvenirs hanging from the ceiling.

Had one on Oceanside Calif that was a Mongol Bar. Walked into it by Accident and ran into a good Marine Friend who had gotten out. Actually had a good time there.

Several Years later I went back to see if he was there this time I was Scared and got out fast. It had turned into a Happy bar.

Never went there, but we had a local bar closed last week.

Seems it was the go to place for soldiers from the near by Army base, and four of them got shot by a civilian. They caught him, and none of the injury?s were severe.

The next day the Base Commander put the bar off limits for all military. The day after that the owner closed down the bar & put it up for sale.

Seems most his clientele were all military, and if they were not coming, then he wasn?t doing any business.

I was at a crappy little bar near Paris Tennessee back in the 70's when I was in college.
A Motorcycle gang came in that scared the hell out of me. This was back when Motorcycle gangs were bad ass! The bartender was nervous as hell, my buddy and I sneaked to the bathroom and slithered out the window like a true cowards and ran like chickens to my car!! I think we made a very smart decision!! That was not the bar for two college kids to be in at that particular time!
I've also been to the Stoneville Saloon more than once in Alzada, Montana.

Ok, I'll tell this story here hoping the statute of limitations has expired...[:I]

Back around the summer of 77 I was stationed at Fort Hood Texas as an MP. I had a close friend there who was from San Antonio. He was always wanting me to go home with him to meet his sister, trying to hook me up with her...[|)]

Once when we were there he said we are going to his favorite country bar that night, and that it was wilder than any old Gilley's club like in Pasadena TX where I grew up.

He hadn't been to the club for a couple of years since he had joined the Army, and so we got quite a surprised when we went inside, and discovered it had turned into a Happy Bar...[:D]

Talk about being embarrassed, but he was even more mad at how I was ribbing him about his favorite (Happy) bar...[:X][;)]

That's when he came up with an idea, and walked down the street to his truck, and got something from behind the seat. He said open up the front door, and when I did he chunked something inside, and said "RUN". The parking lot was crowded with cars, and his truck was parked down the street several hundred yards, so when people started pouring out of the club we couldn't make it to the truck. We had to cut across the street and hide behind a headstone in a cemetery that was across the street from the club.

People in the parking lot were puking, coughing, and gagging all over the place, and I asked him what the heck did he toss into the club? He told me it was a Tear Gas grenade...[:(!]

That's when I got just a tad bit ticked off at him. The police & Fire Department came, and we had to lay behind that headstone while the FD placed big fans at the doors to try and air the place out. All the people left, and I didn't see anyone leave in an ambulance.

After a long while the parking lot was emptied, and the Police & Fire folks all cleared the scene. Things got real dark, and the only vehicle anywhere around was his lone truck parked down the street. We got up, walked down to his truck, jumped in and fired that mutha up, and got the hell out of San Antonio....[8D]

I haven't mentioned this to very many people over the years, so I'm getting it off my chest & coming clean...[^]
